October 30th - November 3rd

Thank you for taking the time to read our third grade blog. Make sure you are checking it weekly for calendar updates, what we are learning,  a glimpse at our week in pictures!

What are we learning?

Math
In math, learners will continue to discover the effects of financial decisions by making decisions about spending, saving, charitable giving, and using credit. Learners will begin to explore the effects of availability of resources and how this affects cost. They will finish and present their project on different personal finance topics.

Homefun: Reflex Math TWO times a week for FIFTEEN minutes


Language Arts
In reading, learners will continue to look at figurative language and elementary of poetry. This week they will be exploring concrete, acrostic, and free verse poems. In writing, learners will write a narrative story in response to the book The Widow's Broom. They will take a spelling pretest and receive their new words lists.

Homefun: RazKids TWO times a week for FIFTEEN minutes and practice spelling words.

Science
Learners will observe forces such as magnetism and gravity acting on objects. In the Magnetism Gizmo which will utilize this week learners will work with bar magnets and a variety of materials. On the magnetic forces tab, learners can see what combinations of magnets and materials result in attraction, repulsion, or no movement at all. 

Social Studies
In social studies, learners are wrapping up their government unit working on basic structure and functions of various levels of government which includes the following:
1) identify local, state, and national government officials and explain how they are chosen;
2) identifying services commonly provided by local, state, and national governments; and
3) explain how local, state, and national government services and financed.

Announcements

Classroom Help in Math

As we learn and practice our multiplication and division facts we'd love some parent helpers that would be willing to work with learners! We'll provide multiplication flash cards and multiplication/division games for you to practice and play one-on-one or in a small group outside the classroom. All you have to do is show up!

Classroom Help in Reading
If you are interested in helping out in the classroom we would love your help in reading. We would love weekly volunteers to come in and work with a small group of students with reading. You will be pulling a small group of students into the hallway to read and practice comprehension strategies. We will provide the books and the activities all you have to do is show up!

Homework

There have been a few changes regarding homework for this year. To align as a campus second through fifth grade will have the same basic homework expectations. Homework will run from Friday to the following Thursday to allow families to utilize the weekends for homework if you choose. This will also allow teachers to check on Friday mornings to see if homework expectations have been met, prior to Texan Town clubs.

Town Center 2nd - 5th Grade Expectations:
-Reflex Math 2 times a week for 15 minutes
-RazKids* 2 times a week for 15 minutes
*RazKids can count toward your child's 30 book challenge*
-Bi-weekly spelling tests

Kindergarten Shoe Drive

It's that time of the year! Kindergarten is hosting it's annual shoe drive for their service learning project. They will be donating the shoes to the Salvation Army. Please bring any used shoes for their donation. There is a collection box in A hall.
