Tennis Shoes for PE & Extended Specials Day (CTT)

Please help make sure that your child wears appropriate shoes on PE days and Move & Groove (Fridays). Additionally, every other Thursday 3rd grade has extended specials during CTT. The dates are outlined for the remainder of the year below. Thank you for your help in making sure your child is safely dressed for the gym!

Smart Watches

We have noticed that more and more of our students have begun wearing smartwatches to school, so we want to take a minute to be clear about expectations for those devices.
Students are not permitted to communicate on their personal devices during the school day. (The same rule applies to their iPads.) This includes parents. Additionally, smartwatches are only to be used to tell time during the day. Please help us in reinforcing this expectation.  If you need to contact your son/daughter during the day, please email your child's teacher or call the front office.
We have talked about these expectations with the students. We've let them know that if they are using their smart watch, cell phone, or other personal devices to communicate (or use any additional feature beyond telling time), they will receive one warning. After that one warning, we will ask for those devices to stay at home.

Yearbooks for Sale

Our yearbook sale is now open! Each year we have a Town Center Yearbook that highlights photos from every class, school events, and staff. It is a great item to have to look back on memories from the year, and we even have a yearbook signing party in May. If you are interested in purchasing a yearbook, please see the graphic below for thee different purchasing options. As a reminder, the TCE Yearbook cost WAS NOT included in the TCE Trail Pass. If you would like a yearbook for your child(ren), you will need to purchase using the website link below.

Our yearbook committee would also love your help in submitting photos for the yearbook. As you attend campus events, if you have any photos you would like to share, see below for information on uploading them to our committee.

WHAT WE ARE LEARNING

ELA - We are finishing Winn Dixie this week and beginning an end of unit project that encompasses them, summarization and their understanding of story elements. It will be fun to showcase these to you during open house the following week.

Also, we are entering into our poetry unit for reading and writing next! Snaps all around!

Social Studies - This week in social studies we will continue to learn about financial literacy. Learners will discuss the need for bartering and money. They will also explore the human, capital and natural resources.

Math - This week we immerse ourselves in Crazy Bizarro Fraction World, where nothing is what it seems and numbers don’t follow the rules we all know. By the end of the week we will be able to identify fractional parts, fractions on a number line, and fractions in a set. We will understand what it means to be a numerator and denominator and that fractions are equal parts of a whole. It’s a big week for these kiddos, and they’re about to crush it!

Science - For the next 2 weeks in Science we will continue our Planet Research Project.  The kids have been hard at work gathering facts about each planet that they will then use to create a virtual museum.

WHAT WE ARE LEARNING

ELA - As we approach the climax of Because of Winn Dixie, our readers will practice the skill of summarizing while also continuing to understand the differences between topics, events and themes!

We have been learning about how feedback improves the writing process and will continue to evaluate our responses to reading using checklists.  Ask your learner to tell you about a goal they have to improve the quality of their work!

Social Studies - It’s time to  explore financial literacy and critical thinking skills as we embark on our Economics unit! Economics may seem like a complex subject for third graders, but with the right approach, it becomes an engaging and enlightening adventure. Through interactive activities, role-playing scenarios, and hands-on exploration, we'll delve into the basics of money, trade, and the interconnectedness of goods and services in our everyday lives.

Math - The big show is upon us, friends, and the name of that show is Fractions! We have some big big concepts to learn down here in B Hall, and we are ready to take the world by storm. I like to think about fractions as little tiny numbers who live on the number line in between 0 and 1, and guess what? They’re NOT just like us! They’re not whole numbers, so the rules are different. For example, in the whole number world, 8 is greater than 2, but by the end of the unit, they’ll understand that when the denominator (new 3rd grade vocab word) is greater, it means the size of the piece is smaller. You read that right, folks, by the end of the unit, your darlings will be comparing fractions and talking about equivalent fractions. (Another way fractions are not like us: 2 fractions that look completely different can actually represent the same amount). These are wild times in Crazy Bizarro Fraction World! This week, we’ll ease into the madness by reviewing what they learned in second grade and making sure they really understand what the numerator (new 3rd grade vocab word) and denominator represent. I can’t wait to get started!

Science - Are you all tired of hearing the planet song yet??  Well sorry to say, it’s here to stay…at least for the next week or 2 :)  Over the next 2 weeks we will be digging deeper into the planets by doing a research project.  Look out for the final product at Open House!

Valentine's Party

Our class Valentine's Day party will be on Wednesday, February 14th at 2:00 p.m. Please have your child address a Valentine's card to each child in their homeroom. The names of students in the class were sent home on Friday, February 2nd. Please reach out to your homeroom teacher if you need a new list. You may attach a small treat to the card, if you would like. Please have them bring cards with them to school on or before Wednesday, February 14th.

We will be decorating Valentine's bags (to collect our Valentines in) at school so there is no need to send in a box or bag!

Parents are welcome to join us on the day of the party. The party in each classroom will be run by the room parents. If you plan on attending, you will need to check in at the front office using your ID. All grade-level parties will be happening at 2:00 so please plan accordingly for parking/check-in.

WHAT WE ARE LEARNING

ELA -

Continuing our journey with Opal and Winn-Dixie, our readers will practice the skills of literal and non literal text, point of view, context clues and more!  Ask your reader to tell you about a theme they are learning about through the book or from one of our Pixar shorts we have watched. You might just learn a valuable life lesson!

Writers improve their skills through feedback!  We will be using feedback and a rubric to evaluate our RACE responses! Learn more about the Race strategy below!

Social Studies - How do humans adapt to their physical environments? We will work on researching different types of areas and regions to help answer that question!

Math - ‘Round the outside, ‘round the outside: perimeter is our topic this week, and it’s new for 3rd graders. Perimeter measures the distance around an object. Finding the perimeter: We. Add. Up. All. The. Sides. It sounds easy enough, and it is, but sometimes 3rd graders take issue with switching back and forth between area (length x width) and perimeter (side + side + side + side). Another difference is that we can find the perimeter of any shape, as we’re just adding up all the sides, but we can only find the area of squares and rectangles in 3rd grade. Last, but not least, we will learn how to find the missing side. That means they are given the perimeter to start. Then, they add up all the sides they know and subtract that amount from the perimeter. You better lose yourself in the moment you own it you better never let it go go go… !

Science - Next week in Science we will expand our space exploration to look at all 8 planets…Sorry, Pluto this doesn’t include you.  Poor Pluto.  We will focus on the order of the planets from the sun → Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.  We will use the mnemonic to help us; My Very Excellent Mom Just Served Us Nachos.
