February 26th - March 2nd

Welcome third grade families! Thank you for taking the time to read our third grade blog. Make sure you are checking it weekly for calendar updates, what we are learning, and a glimpse at our week in pictures!


What are we learning?

Math
In math, learners will begin to explore and represent fractions greater than zero and less than or equal to one with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 using concrete objects and pictorial models, including strip diagrams and number lines. Learner will also been to understand and explore corresponding/ equivalent fractions.

Homefun: Reflex Math TWO times a week for FIFTEEN minutes; SEE HOMEWORK CALENDAR BELOW

Language Arts

In reading, learners will continue their study on folktales. They will record the folktale elements that they see in various tall tales and legends. In writing, learners will write about their favorite birthday, and create a fable of their own.

Homefun: Homework article: My Plan; Study for weekly spelling test; Razkids 2 times a week for 15 minutes


Science
Learners will observe and describe the physical characteristics of environments and how they support populations and communities of plants and animals within an ecosystem.


Social Studies
In social studies, learners will begin a research project over the different regions of the United States.

February 19th - 23rd

What are we learning?

Math
In math, learners will continue to work through self paced geometry ports focusing on classifying and sorting two-dimensional and three-dimensional figures. As well as identifying two-dimension figures based on present or absence of specific attributes.

Homefun: Homework packet DUE BY Friday, February 23rd; Reflex Math TWO times a week for FIFTEEN minutes

Language Arts

In reading, learners will begin their unit of study on folktales. They will record the folktale elements that they see in various fairy tales and fables. In writing, learners will write their final draft of their biography of a classmate.

Homefun: Study for weekly spelling test and Razkids 2 times a week for 15 minutes


Science
The games have begun!! We will be learning about several different winter sports, building games, and competing in our Winter STEM Games such as ski jumping, bobsled, hockey, curling, snowboarding and biathlon! These excellent engaging activities have been a big hit so far!

These activities helping our learners develop critical thinking and engineering skills. Learners are planing, designing, and executing their own ideas. After they have completed their activities and game, there is time for reflection on what worked and what didn't work. Let the games continue...


Social Studies
In social studies, learners will continue to learn how to describe map elements, discuss different regions of the U.S. and how humans adapt to their physical environment.

February 12th - 16th

What are we learning?

Math
In math, learners will begin classifying and sorting two-dimensional and three-dimensional figures and identifying two-dimension figures based on present or absence of specific attributes.

Homefun: Reflex Math TWO times a week for FIFTEEN minutes

Language Arts

In reading, learners will revisit biographies and autobiographies, and explain the similarities and differences between the two. They will also learn about 1st and 3rd person point of view. In writing, learners will interview a classmate, and there will also be a spelling pretest on Monday.

Homefun: Study for weekly spelling test, Razkids 2 times a week for 15 minutes, and the passage "Interview Great-Grandma Jones" (due Friday, February 16th).

Science
Let the 2018 Winter Olympics begin!! We will be learning about several different winter sports, building games, and competing in our Winter STEM Games! This excellent engaging activity will be a big hit! Please continue to send those toilet paper and paper towel rolls in.

Valentine's Day Party

Our class Valentine's Day party will be on Wednesday, February 14th at 2:00 pm. If your child would like, they may make Valentines or bring cards. Please make sure he or she brings one each person in the class. A letter came home this week with a class list for your child's homeroom. Due to allergies please make sure all Valentine's treats are peanut/tree nut free. Students may decorate and bring hteir own box or bag from home to hold their Valentine's. You are welcome to join us for the party!

February 5th - 9th

Welcome third grade families! Thank you for taking the time to read our third grade blog. Make sure you are checking it weekly for calendar updates, what we are learning, and a glimpse at our week in pictures!

What are we learning?

Math
In math, learners will continue to determine the area of rectangles with whole number side lengths in problems using multiplication related to the number of rows times the number of unit squares in each row. Learners will also begin to explore find the perimeter of polygons or the missing length when given perimeter and remaining side lengths in problems.

Homefun: Reflex Math TWO times a week for FIFTEEN minutes; Homework packet due February 9th.

Language Arts

In reading, learners will look at fiction and nonfiction texts to determine the Author's Purpose for writing them. In writing workshop, learners will continue to focus on writing narrative or expository pieces with strong introductions and conclusions. They will take a spelling pretest on Monday over consonant patterns, and recieve their new lists on Tuesday, The next spelling test will be on Friday, February 9th.

Homefun: RazKids TWO times a week for FIFTEEN minutes and spelling test on Friday.

Science
In science, learners will wrap up and review their study on the solar system.

Social Studies
In social studies, learners will be using their knowledge of map skills to create a map of their won using a legend, compass rose, grid, scale, etc.
