All elementary campuses will be able to have the 1-2 assigned PTO room parents attend and run the parties on February 14th. No other parents or visitors will be able to join that day.

Please see the following from Ms. Matlock...

All children will participate in the Play It Safe lessons in February, unless parents OPT OUT.

New Positive Covid-19 Case Reporting Procedure

A big thank you to our families for communicating positive student Covid cases to us. In order to help streamline the communication process for both families and our campus nurse, please fill out the following Google Form if your child receives a positive Covid-19 test. The form information goes directly to our campus nurse. https://forms.gle/VUex3RUqzgtsNa716

Once our nurse has received the form from a family, she will reach out to them during school hours to discuss a return date to school and any questions they may have.

Headphones/Earbuds

Please ask your child if he or she has working headphones or earbuds for school. If not, please send some to school. We are out of earbuds from the school supply packs and have checked with Ms. Martin about buying class sets. Due to cost, it is not possible at this time.

Math

We are currently looking at Wednesday to be the big day for your kiddo to show what he or she knows about all things area and perimeter; the post test for area and perimeter is here! This includes how to find the area of a rectangle and/or square, how to find the perimeter of any shape, how to find the unknown side when given the perimeter, how to decide if a problem is looking for area or perimeter, and how to find the area of a composite shape. At the end of next week, we will begin our GEOMETRY unit! 2D shapes! Polygons! Lots of new vocab! Exciting, isn’t it? Stay tuned…

Science

In Science we will begin our new Unit on Patterns in the Sky. We will start by learning about the Sun and how it effects the Earth and Moon.

Reading/Writing

In reading we will continue our character traits unit by studying plot elements and how characters fit into the story. In writing we will learn how to gear our persuasive essays towards targeted audiences and develop strong reasons to support our opinions.

Social Studies

In social studies we will explore spending vs. savings, unplanned spending, and how to use a budget to organize expenses.

Headphones/Earbuds
Many of the kiddos are still in need of a set of headphones/earbuds that they can keep at school. We have been through quite a few already. The kiddos have many times where they are watching a video or can listen to directions and/or books being read aloud to them.  Thank you so much for your help with this!

Math

Area continues, and we’re gonna need our big brains for this concept! COMPOSITE AREA, comin’ in hot! A composite figure (for third graders) is a shape that combines a square and a rectangle, or rectangles and rectangles, or squares and squares. Next week, we will figure out the AREA of composite figures. This is a 4 step process: 1) partition the figure (split it into 2 separate shapes) 2) label the shapes A and B (and C if there are 3 separate shapes 3) find the area of shape A 4) find the area of shape B 4) add the areas together

This is a LOT for 3rd graders: multiplication, remembering all the steps, adding…this is always a big week for our kiddos!

Science

In Science last week we learned about natural resources and how important they are to us.  This week learners will be creating a flyer or commercial about the importance of WHY we should reduce, reuse, recycle and HOW we can do that at TCE and home.

Reading/Writing

In reading we will continue our character traits unit by observing what our characters say, think, feel, and do to formulate theories about our characters. We will also begin exploring plot elements through “story mountains”. In writing, we will learn how to brainstorm ideas for persuasive writing.

Social Studies

In social studies, we will learn about scarcity and how supply and demand affect consumers. We will overview old vocabulary and add to our economic words list.

Math

Area = length x width baby baby!! Next week, we will begin to learn about area: the space inside. Words that mean “find the area” involve things that COVER such as wrapping paper, carpet, wallpaper, and paint. (Remember, perimeter words involve things that GO AROUND.) What is new for 3rd graders concerning area is that they will not just count blocks to find the area of rectangles and squares, they will use the formula of length x width. We will review counting same-size blocks stacked tightly and without spaces inside rectangles and squares, but they will use the formula quite a bit. While we can find the perimeter of any shape, here in 3rd grade, we will only learn the formula for area for rectangles and squares - length x width.

Parent Resources - Link 1 Link 2 Perimeter

Science

Next week we will explore natural resources.  We will discuss that a natural resource is something that is found in nature and can be used by people. We will identify Earth’s natural resources…light, air, water, plants, animals, soil, stone, minerals, and fossil fuels.

Reading/Writing

In reading, we are starting a new read aloud, Because of Winn Dixie.  We will be focusing on analyzing internal character traits by studying a character's thoughts, feelings, words and actions.
In writing, we will begin learning how to write to persuade.

Social Studies

In Social Studies, we will continue our economics study.  We will be adding to our important vocabulary words and comparing how education can influence career choices and hourly wages.

Math

Happy New Math Year! We have studied several kinds of ways to organize data including line plots, bar graphs, pictographs, and input/output tables. We will continue to review these and answer questions using these charts and graphs as the year continues.

Next week, we will begin our perimeter unit. In this unit, we will learn what perimeter means (the distance around), when to use perimeter (words that mean “find the perimeter” include frame, ribbon, fence, border, baseboards…all things that GO AROUND), and how to find the unknown side length when given the perimeter.  Embedded into this unit will be how to measure using a tape measure and a ruler. Please help us by working the word perimeter into your conversations as you drive along: “It would take us a long time to walk the perimeter of this building.”

Science

In Science we will begin discussing Weathering and Erosion aka slooooooooooow land changes.  We will explore how Earth's surface changes slowly over time.

Reading/Writing

In reading we will kick off our character traits unit by discussing physical and personality character traits. In writing we will work on publishing our fairy tales by animating them.

Social Studies

In social studies we are kicking off our economics unit. We will start off by discussing important vocabulary words and human capital.
