We are ready for our week of review and final STAAR practice for math! We will be reviewing for math STAAR based on your child’s heat map that was sent home Friday, April 14. Your children have learned all the 3rd grade math skills they need and are ready to shine on May 2!

We will be using what we have learned about plant and animal adaptations to work on a fun project.  Our wonderful DLC, Ms. Tinch, created a Minecraft Adaptations Project.

Math

This is it folks, we are nearing the finish line in the race to make sure we’ve learned all the 3rd grade math before Math STAAR 2023 (May 2). We will be working on measurement and financial literacy this week, which obviously go hand in hand. Well, not really…knowing to choose gallons when measuring the amount of water in a swimming pool and about how supply and demand affects costs and profit don’t really go together at all, but here we are. #leftovermath

Your kids will learn about the Kingdom of Gallon (ask for a demo) and the units for measuring capacity. We will also review financial literacy concepts like income, labor, human capital, spending, saving, credit, and interest. It’s a big week, and your children are ready!

Science

This past week we started learning about adaptations and how they help animals survive and thrive in their environments.  We will continue learning about adaptations this upcoming week.  We will then look at some adaptations and see if they are physical or behavioral.

Reading/Writing

Our Reading STAAR test is on Wednesday! Thank you to those of you who have sent in your secret letters to your children. After our STAAR assessment, we will celebrate our hard work. Then we will dive into a children's literature unit (folktales, fairy tales, fables, myths, and legends) that incorporates both reading and writing.

Social Studies

For a few weeks we will research how individuals contributed to the expansion of existing communities or to the creation of new communities.  We are going to try our hands at interviews, podcasting, and maybe even augmented reality museums!  This should be a fun time for product quality and creativity.

Math

Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives; so now, 3rd grade families, it’s time we learn about TIME. Telling time to the minute on an analog clock was a 2nd grade skill, but we will practice it. We will learn the 3rd grade skill of how to calculate time that has passed, AKA elapsed time. When I was in 3rd grade 35 years ago in Altus OK, we regrouped hours by converting them into minutes and seconds, so elapsed time may as well have been advanced calculus for as well as I understood it. Time has made us wiser, so now, it’s taught on a timeline - and it’s a cinch.  In addition, we are moving into more STAAR practice (Math STAAR is May 2), and your kiddos are doing awesome!

Science

Next week, we will take what we have learned about habitats, organisms, environments and ecosystems to work on an AR Habitat Project.

Reading/Writing

As STAAR Reading approaches, we are in review mode. Your child will be assessed in ALL ELAR areas. They will show off their comprehension skills, inference, character analysis, author’s purpose, non-fiction text analysis, and poetry.  In addition, they will be tested on revising and editing skills AND will produce written responses.  They have all been working so hard and we are so proud of their efforts. This week we will analyze data and practice through choice boards and games.

Social Studies

This week we are investigating people who have made scientific breakthroughs or created or invented new technology and we will describe the impact of these scientific breakthroughs and technologies through listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
