What are we learning?

Math

In math, learners will begin to determine the area of rectangles with whole number side lengths in problems using multiplication related to the number of rows times the number of unit squares in each row. Learners will also begin to explore find the perimeter of polygons or the missing length when given perimeter and remaining side lengths in problems.

Homefun: Reflex Math TWO times a week for FIFTEEN minutes

Language Arts

In reading, learners read various types of passages and learn and review strategies for answering multiple choice comprehension questions. The spelling pretest will be on Monday, lists will be sent home on Tuesday, and the test will be on Friday.

Homefun: RazKids TWO times a week for FIFTEEN minutes and spelling test on Friday.

Science

In science, learners will identify the planets in Earth's solar system and their position in relation to the Sun by creating a mnemonic device to help recall the order of our planets.

Social Studies

In social studies, learners will learn how map elements assist in creating and interpreting maps.

What are we learning?

Math

In math, learners will begin to use strategies and algorithms, including the standard algorithm, to multiply a two-digit number by a one-digit number. Strategies may include mental math, partial products, and the commutative, associative, and distributive properties.  Please make sure that your child is continuing to practice their multiplication facts, these are extremely important as we move into two-digit by one-digit multiplication.

Homefun: Reflex Math TWO times a week for FIFTEEN minutes

Language Arts

In reading, learners will begin looking at main idea in nonfiction books. In writing, learners will write their middle of the year assessment, and work on procedural writing. Our grammar focus this week will be on prepositions. In spelling, our new words will be following the VCCCV pattern. The spelling pretest will be on Tuesday, lists will be sent home on Wednesday, and the test will be on Friday.

Homefun: RazKids TWO times a week for FIFTEEN minutes and spelling test on Friday.

Science

In science, learners will construct models that demonstrate the relationship of the Sun, Earth and Moon, including orbits and positions.

Social Studies

In social studies, learners will begin their geography unit by discussing how map elements assist us in interpreting and creating maps.

What are we learning?

Math

In math, learners will begin the relationship between multiplication and division is realized and used to find quotients. Please make sure that your child is continuing to practice their multiplication facts.

Homefun: Reflex Math TWO times a week for FIFTEEN minutes

Language Arts

In reading, learners will be comparing and contrasting fiction and nonfiction text features, and beginning our middle of the year assessments. In writing, learners will be exploring the -eigh and -ought spelling patterns, and looking at conjunctions. 

Homefun: RazKids TWO times a week for FIFTEEN minutes and spelling test on Friday.

Science

In science, learners will be describing and illustrating the Sun as a star composed of gases that provides light and heat energy for the water cycle.

Social Studies

In social studies, learners will be wrapping up research and writing on historical figures.

Practice STAAR

This upcoming week, Tuesday (1/9) and Wednesday (1/10), third grade will take the practice STAAR test. With that being said, we want to reiterate that we are not testing for accuracy. The purpose of the practice STAAR is not to assess what our learners know, but to practice and prepare for what the test will look like. We want the practice test to be a low stress experience for our learners!
