Smart Watches
We have noticed that more and more of our students have begun wearing smartwatches to school, so we want to take a minute to be clear about expectations for those devices.
Students are not permitted to communicate on their personal devices during the school day. (The same rule applies to their iPads.) This includes parents. Additionally, smartwatches are only to be used to tell time during the day. Please help us in reinforcing this expectation.  If you need to contact your son/daughter during the day, please email your child's teacher or call the front office.
We have talked about these expectations with the students. We've let them know that if they are using their smart watch, cell phone, or other personal devices to communicate (or use any additional feature beyond telling time), they will receive one warning. After that one warning, we will ask for those devices to stay at home.

Yearbooks for Sale

Our yearbook sale is now open! Each year we have a Town Center Yearbook that highlights photos from every class, school events, and staff. It is a great item to have to look back on memories from the year, and we even have a yearbook signing party in May. If you are interested in purchasing a yearbook, please see the graphic below for thee different purchasing options. As a reminder, the TCE Yearbook cost WAS NOT included in the TCE Trail Pass. If you would like a yearbook for your child(ren), you will need to purchase using the website link below.

Our yearbook committee would also love your help in submitting photos for the yearbook. As you attend campus events, if you have any photos you would like to share, see below for information on uploading them to our committee.

WHAT WE ARE LEARNING

ELA - Our Third Grade Readers will start their week by taking the Reading MAP test on Monday, January 29Please make sure iPads are up to date with a full charge on Monday morning. We can’t wait for them to show what they know! We will continue studying comprehension skills using our class read aloud, Because of Winn Dixie. We will learn about cause and effect, figurative and literal language and more as we also work on responding to reading in our Writer’s Workshop block.

Social Studies - Ch-ch-ch changes! Our Geographers will be exploring how the Earth changes over time and how those changes impact people and communities.

Math - We have wrapped up our geometry unit and are moving on to area and perimeter. Usually, we work on perimeter first, as that is a review skill from 2nd grade. But this year we’re gonna get wild and learn about area first. Crazy, right?! Last year in 2nd, the kiddos covered squares and rectangles with squares and counted those squares to find the area of those shapes.. This year, they will use a formula (length x width) to find the area of those same 2 shapes, and they will also read word problems and decipher if they’re area problems or perimeter problems. Can you even? 3rd graders are amazing!

Want to help your 3rd grader with math but aren’t sure what to do? Currently, you can quiz your kiddo on the names of the 2D and 3D shapes. You can also pose problems such as “How many sides would you have if you had a nonagon and a dodecagon?” (Answer: 21).

Finally, our middle of year (MOY) math MAP test will be Friday, February 2.

Science - We will continue our focus on rapid land changes, finishing up our survival guides and reflection!

What we are learning

Math - We will finish/solidify our quadrilateral deep dive and move on to 3D shapes because we are moving and grooving through our geometry unit! The kiddos have done really well with grasping that quadrilaterals can be more than one shape, which is such an abstract concept, especially for 8 year olds. This tells us that your children are brilliant! Our 3D shape concepts include learning the attributes (faces, edges, vertices) of cones, cylinders, prisms, and cubes. Finally, did you know that prisms are shapes that have identical bases and no curves? This will help us determine which 3D shapes can and cannot be considered prisms. Anyone, anyone? (Be sure to ask your learner at the end of the week for the answer!) Something to work on at home is making sure that your child knows the names and attributes of all 2D and 3D shapes. Ask your child to show you the Geometry Keynotes for help (ahem, not that you need it, or anything of course). Geometry, baby! Let’s gooooo!

Science - This past week we finished up learning about the cause and effects of Rapid Land Changes.  Now our survival of these is in the hands of our kids! 🙂 They will choose one rapid land change to focus on and will create a survival guide.  Stay tuned for the end result!

ELAR -

Our 3rd grade readers will begin a new novel study using  our new read aloud, Because of Winn Dixie. We will continue working on identifying plot elements and themes, making inferences and summarizing what we read in fiction texts.
Our “Ted Talk” persuasive speeches are complete and we are looking forward to working on using our writing skills to respond to what we read!

Social Studies - Social Studies continues to be an amazing race across Geography!  As we finish our learning journal about understanding maps and globes, we will move into how communities adapt and modify their environment.

What we are learning

Math - Parent tutoring, anyone?! This week we will start our deep dive into quadrilaterals and their attributes, which includes parallelograms, rhombuses, squares, rectangles, and trapezoids. To really blow your mind, we will discuss fascinating, abstract concepts like how rhombuses CAN be squares but aren’t ALWAYS squares, how squares are a special kind of rectangle, how rectangles are also parallelograms and quadrilaterals but not rhombuses, and how trapezoids are only quadrilaterals. Do we think it’s time to dust off the ol’ high school geometry book? Nah, your kiddos have totally got this! We’re gonna keep on keepin’ on!

Science - This upcoming week we finish up exploring a variety of fast land changes: tsunamis, landslides, hurricanes and tornadoes.  We are finding what causes these to occur and the result after.

ELAR -

This week we will use the Plot Mountain to share what we know about Wild Robot. Each learner will create a final project that displays our understanding of illustrations, captions, and the key elements of plot including exposition (introduction), rising action, climax, falling action and resolution.

If all goes according to plan, your kids will be Ted Talk keynote speakers….well, kinda! We hope to record our persuasive speeches to share with their appropriate audience.

Social Studies - This week our Geography unit will come to a close. We explore maps and globes, both the physical and digital versions.

What we are learning

Math - Our geometry unit has begun and it’s groovy, ya dig? Last year, the kiddos learned the attributes of 2D shapes from triangles (3 sides, 3 angles, 3 vertices) all the way to dodecagons (12 sides, 12 angles, 12 vertices). Geometry is an interesting “math” unit because, well, there’s not a lot of math. On the contrary, there are lots and LOTS of vocab words: side, angle, vertex/vertices, parallel lines, polygons, right angles, 12 different shape names to review…take some deep breaths, parents, and be prepared to be amazed with your child and the amount of geometry knowledge that is about to go down. Right on, right angle!

Science - Let’s shake, rattle and roll!  We have started our 2nd part of our Earth’s Surface Unit!  We are looking at Rapid Changes in these upcoming weeks and will start with exploring volcanoes and earthquakes.

ELAR -

This next week in reading we will finish a novel that we have been reading for a few months! It is such a fun read. We hope you have heard some about our Robot, Roz. We will be working through the narrative elements of plot and theme as we wrap up the story.

We’re sorry, not sorry, if your kids are coming home trying to persuade you to do things. We have been learning about the elements of persuasive writing including the issue at hand, the target audience, and delivery mode.

Social Studies - Next week we will wrap up our map unit before heading into an entire new unit on Economics!
