Each year the Lions Club of Coppell provides holiday baskets and toys to families in need in Coppell's attendance area. The food baskets and toys are delivered by members of the Lions Club of Coppell, and the identify of the recipients is kept confidential. All they need to know is the address and the family demographics, sizes, and any special needs the family may have. If your family would benefit from this, please return to our school nurse or front office by December 1st.

What are we learning?

Math
In math, we will spend the beginning of the week reviewing multiplication and division word problems. Later in the week we will start our choice board to practice and master the skills we have learned thus far in this unit including: representing multiplication, fact families, equal shares, 2x1 digit multiplication, and word problems. The choice board will continue into the following week.

We will continue taking our multiplication fact quizzes on Mondays and Wednesdays. If all 10 facts are correct in 2 minutes, your child will be able to move on to a new quiz the next day we are testing. If they're not mastered, then that same quiz will be taken again until all 10 are correct.  Additionally, any practice with fact fluency that can be done at home is VERY helpful. Each learner has been placed on multiplication and division on Reflex Math for this reason. Flashcards at home also work.

Language Arts
In language arts, we will begin our unit on Fables, Legends and Myths!  We will learn how they all have themes and details to support the themes. We will also learn how fables, myths and legends play an important role in many cultures.

Science
In Science, the learners will be starting a new unit: Earth's Surface. We will start this unit by discussing fast land changes caused by natural disasters. We will research and study the causes and effects of natural disasters including volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, and landslides.

Social Studies
In Social Studies the learners will explore how humans modify and adapt to their physical environment when exposed to different landforms, climate and natural disasters.

What are we learning?

Math
In math, we will begin learning various strategies to multiply a 2 digit number by a one digit number. These strategies include area model, distributive (break apart) strategy, and standard algorithm. Strategy videos for these strategies can be found on your teachers website and watched prior to learning them next week.

In language arts, we are continuing our character analysis unit by strengthening our inferencing skills. We will be tracking our characters throughout the whole story and study how characters react to problems. As we learn more about our characters, we will begin comparing to other characters in the same and different books.

Science
In Science, the learners we will continue to work through our first ADI (Argument Driven Inquiry) project for the year involving forces and magnetism. This process will take 1-2 weeks and practice the skills of creating, testing, and defending a scientific argument. We are also researching and adding the career of mechanical engineer to our scientist career connection trade cards.

Social Studies
In social studies, we will kick off the week with recognizing veteran's day and discussing its importance. The rest of the week, we will continue our unit on maps. The learners have been using their new learning journals to track learning, and will continue to use this tool to explore. We will be discussing cardinal directions and map grids, and the learners will get an opportunity to practice using and creating map grids. We will also be comparing and contrasting maps and globes.

CISD Family Survey

CISD is currently surveying our families in order to gain insight into your perception of our schools and district effectiveness. This survey shouldn’t take more than a few minutes to complete and will be a valuable source of information for us, as we work to make our schools and our district the best that they can be. You may complete the survey online between now and Nov. 4, using a computer, tablet or smartphone. To take the survey, please visit https://surveys.panoramaed.com, then select your child(ren)’s school. If you have multiple children in CISD, we ask that you take the survey for each school your child attends.

What are we learning?

Math
In math, we will continue to learn various ways to represent multiplication and division. We have learned equal groups and arrays and will learn repeated subtraction and number lines early next week. Please remember that your child's teacher has strategy videos on her website. On Monday we will begin our timed multiplication fact quizzes. We will only be taking our fact quizzes on Mondays and Wednesdays. Your child will be able to choose what quiz he or she wants to take on Monday rather than starting with 0's and working chronologically through to 10's. If all 10 facts are correct in 2 minutes, your child will be able to move on to a new quiz on Wednesday. If they're not mastered, then that same quiz will be taken again on Wednesday until all 10 are correct.  Additionally, any practice with fact fluency that can be done at home is VERY helpful. What are we learning?

Math
In math, learners will be taking a multiplication and division pretest on Monday. Please remember that our pretests are not weighted and do not go towards their mastery for the year. They are assessments used solely for instructional purposes. Throughout the week we will learn various strategies to represent multiplication so that the learners have a conceptual understanding of what is happening.

After learning the 'why' behind multiplication, we will begin our timed multiplication fact quizzes on Monday, November 11th. These will be 2 minute timed quizzes on each times table. They are allowed to take one quiz per day, and move through the times tables (up to x10) at their own pace. If they don't finish the quiz that is A-ok, they can retake that times table once a day until reaching mastery. There is no time limit as for when these quizzes will end, as we know each learner works and memorizes at different paces. However, any practice with fact fluency that can be done at home is VERY helpful. Each learner has been placed on multiplication and division on Reflex Math for this reason. Flashcards at home also work.

Language Arts
In language arts we are continuing our unit on character analysis. We will explore inferencing some more and how we may use our past knowledge combined with what the book says to infer things about our characters. We are also going to talk about how stories have problems, and explore different ways characters react to problems. We will discuss how the way a character reacts to problems tells us a lot about them and their traits.

Science
In Science, the learners will complete their energy expert research and present to their classmates. Following the project completion we will begin to work through our first ADI (Argument Driven Inquiry) project for the year involving forces. This process will take 1-2 weeks and practice the skills of creating, testing, and defending a scientific argument.

Social Studies
In social studies we are wrapping out our unit on government and citizenship by talking overviewing the purposes of the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution. We will begin our upcoming unit on geography by introducing maps, parts of maps, and what they are used for. The learners will be utilizing a new learning journal to track their learning throughout this maps unit.
