We will be making Function Machines in math the week of December 13-17. Every student will make a Function Machine, so each student will need to bring 2 items: an empty, clean, ½ gallon cardboard milk or juice carton and a flexible piece of cardboard - think like that of a cereal box. Please start sending them in with your child (labeled with his or her name) the week after Thanksgiving. We may need extra, so we would appreciate anyone who is able to send in extra materials. Headphones and Charged iPads

Now that we are in the swing of things we are using our iPads daily.  Please help remind your child to charge their iPad each night.  Also, we are using our headphones daily as well.  Many of the kiddos are in need of a set that they can keep at school. We have already been through quite a few sets of the earbuds. :)

Math 

Yay! The post test for multiplication and division will be on Thursday, December 2. We will review our hearts out until then and are super pumped to show what we know! The post test will include representing multiplication and division, 2 by 1 digit multiplication using the standard algorithm, and multiplication and division word problems that are single step and multistep. Please keep in mind that we will be making function machines right before winter break. Each 3rd grader needs a clean, dry, empty, 1/2 gallon cardboard container (like a milk carton) and a flexible piece of cardboard (like a cereal box). The third graders can bring them in starting Monday, November 29.

Science 

We will continue exploring fast land changes.  We will look at what causes them and the result after.  Towards the end of the week the kids will begin working on a survival guide.  They will choose one fast land change to focus on.  In a few short weeks, we will know how to survive Tsunamis, Landslides, Earthquakes, and Volcanoes!  Woohoo!  Safety first!

Reading/Writing 

When we come back, we will kick off our new unit! We will be discussing the characteristics of legends, myths, fables, fairy tales, and folk tales. We will explore examples of each. In writing, we will be writing our own versions of popular fairy tales!

Social Studies 

In social studies, we will be finishing our maps and presenting them to the class. We will then overview different landforms and climates.

Snacks

We are having many students who rely on the nurse to provide snacks every day. We’ve even had kids who don’t like the snack that they’ve packed, so they want to go shopping at Nurse Crenshaw’s clinic to see their options. :) We are asking you to please make sure your child packs a healthy snack (hint hint - no candy, please) every day. When your child goes to the nurse to get snack, he or she misses direct instruction. This is a great opportunity to help your child increase his or her responsibility and take something off your plate! They will need help to get into the habit, so we suggest setting an alarm on their ipad to remind them each afternoon. Thank you for your help!

Math 

Next week in math, we are back on WORD PROBLEMS! (Every child’s favorite, obvi.) But instead of focusing on addition and subtraction, we will focus on multiplication and division word problems and being able to distinguish between the two operations. We will continue to use Reflex to monitor your child’s fluent multiplication and division facts; you are welcome to have your child to work on it at home, but we do it at school everyday. Knowing the 0-10 facts is a standard that is reported on starting on the next report card (beginning of January). Mondays will be “Milestone Mondays”, where we celebrate all your child’s milestones in Reflex! Be on the lookout for Milestone certificates in your child’s backpack!

Science 

Next week, we will begin our unit on Earth’s Surface.  We will start with exploring Rapid Land Changes, which is always a favorite!  Tsunamis, Earthquakes and Volcanoes, OH MY! 

Reading/Writing 

In reading, we will overview informational and narrative nonfiction texts. We will review summarizing narrative nonfiction using story elements, and finding main ideas in informational nonfiction. In writing, we will continue working on our informational books by researching an animal, finding main ideas we want to teach about, and working through the writing process.

Social Studies 

Next week, we will continue practicing our map skills by looking at map grids and comparing maps and globes. We will show our learning by creating our own maps to wrap up the unit.

Veteran's Day

We are excited to acknowledge and celebrate our veterans next week. In lieu of a ceremony this year, our Cub Scouts from Pack 850 will greet our learners in the morning and several will help present on our morning announcements at 7:45 AM. Our morning announcements can be accessed using our KTEX Youtube Channel. Click here to access.

We also would love for you to email us pictures of any family or friends that are veterans in order for us to include them in our video. Please send any pictures to jmartin@coppellisd.com by noon on Wednesday, November 10th.

Math 

We have boldly stepped where every 3rd grader has gone before: into the final frontier of division! We will be practicing representing division (recognizing division on a number line, repeated subtraction, equal groups) and solving division equations and division word problems in this upcoming week. We have decided to devote time in each math class next week to our 3rd graders learning their 3s and 4s facts. Flashcards at home are a great way to practice! Also, we will use Reflex to determine who has learned their basic multiplication facts to 10, which is reported on the next report card. The kiddos work on Reflex here at school every day; at-home use is also permitted. We will continue to practice the songs, counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s, and the 9s trick. #9sfactsareamazing

Science 

Well our past week was wild and crazy so we didn’t get to our Forces game.  We are moving it to this upcoming week!  

Reading/Writing 

In reading, we will be continuing our nonfiction unit by continuing to explore narrative nonfiction and how to infer main ideas. In writing we will begin to transition to writing our own informational paragraphs.

Social Studies 

Next week, we will be kicking off our new maps unit. We will be exploring what maps are and how we can use legends and compasses to help read maps.
