Background Checks
Please follow these steps to complete your Volunteer Background Check for the 2019-2020 school year:
  1. Visit coppellisd.com/volunteer
  2. Click on “Volunteer Application and Background Check Forms”
  3. Then, follow the “New User? Click here to register” prompts.Note, everyone is a new user in this system and MUST set up a new account. Previous Coppell ISD logins and passwords will not work with this new system. Once you set up an account, you can use this user name and password each year for your Volunteer Background Check.
  4. Click on “Add New Application” under “Online Applications.”
  5. Under “What type of position are you applying for?,” Click on “Volunteer.”
  6. Click on each tab on the left side of the page and submit the information requested. You must click on each tab to complete the process. Please note you can select multiple campuses for which you would like to volunteer.
  7. Click “Submit” to submit your application.
  8. Be sure to complete the application/background check a week in advance before you volunteer.

What are we learning?

Math
In math, learners will be learning different addition strategies including the break apart strategy and the standard algorithm. We will learn thinking patterns for addition that will help learners identify when addition is the correct operation in word problems. Our place value post test will be this coming Monday, October 30th. 

Language Arts
In Language Arts, we are coming to the end of our fiction unit. We will be continuing to discuss context clues and how to overcome the hurdles of hard words and phrases in order to increase overall comprehension and understanding. Within context clues, we will be touching on figurative language and how to use context to understand its meaning. We will also be discussing genre and how to tell what genre a book is, as well as continuing to set and monitor reading goals.

Science
In science, learners will learn about mixtures. We will also be completing our first career connection trade card of the year for the properties of matter unit.

Social Studies
In social studies, we will continue to discuss citizenship and what makes a good citizen. We will be discussing the topic of voting and how it relates to citizenship and government.

We'd love for our TCE families to join us Tuesday, September 24th at Sonic. Come by any time between 5:00-8:00 PM for great food delivered by our very own TCE teachers and staff as your carhops! A portion of the night's sales goes directly to our school. We cant wait to see you there!

What are we learning?

Math
In math, learners will be completing a choice board to practice the place value skills that we have been learning. We will continue practice with rounding and estimating sums as well to prepare for our Place Value Post test that is coming up. 

Language Arts
In Language Arts we will be be talking about reading grit and how we can overcome obstacles in our reading. We will be discussing context clues and learning how to use context within and beyond the text to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words and phrases. 

Science
In science, learners will be investigating changes in states of matter. We will discuss and investigate melting, freezing, evaporation, and condensation. We will also learn about mixtures and experiment with separating mixtures. 

Social Studies
In social studies we will be wrapping up our Communities and Culture unit by presenting our culture projects. We will begin moving into our new unit, Government and Citizenship by discussing what makes a good citizen.

What are we learning?

Math
In math, learners will continue representing numbers (up to 100,000) in multiple ways and compare and order them based on their place value. We will continue our learning about rounding, the rounding rules, and begin to estimate sums after rounding. 

Language Arts
In Language Arts, we will continue our unit on the strategy of retelling. We will also work on our reading grit. Show me Spelling Program will begin this week. Please continue to work on reading 20 mins a night to help improve reading skills, writing skills and vocabulary!

Science
In science, learners will finish up investigating matter and its physical properties. By the end of the week we will begin talking about the states of matter and how solids, liquids, and gases differ. We will also investigate changing states of matter. 

Social Studies
This week in social studies we will be continuing our discussion on culture and how it impacts a community. Learners will create products that reflect their own cultures, and present them to the class to celebrate diversity in our own classroom communities.

Grade Level T-shirts
If you ordered a grade level t-shirt over the summer and have not received it yet, they are still working on orders. They are coming and will be delivered when they arrive :)


Arctic Adventure Book Fair
Our TCE Book Fair is almost here! Our library is currently being transformed into an "Arctic Adventure" thanks to our fantastic PTO volunteers. This is all in preparation for our Book Fair that runs Monday, September 9th - Friday, September 15th. 
To help our Book Fair be most successful, we need your help. Please consider volunteering a small portion of your time to help out in the Book Fair using the link below.
As with all volunteering opportunities, a background check is required. Please see the section below to learn more about this process.

What are we learning?

Math
In math, learners will continue representing numbers (up to 100,000) in multiple ways and compare and order them based on their place value. Learners will explain the relationship in the base-ten system, and represent this relationship using expanded notation. We will practice writing numbers in standard form, expanded form, word form, and drawing them using base 10 blocks. We will also work on comparing and ordering numbers through the 100,000.

Language Arts
In Language Arts, learners are continuing to establish our reading life in 3rd grade! We are setting up our reader's workshop, and working on our metacognitive skills ( thinking about how we think about our reading and learning.) We will continue to work on the strategy of retelling.

Science
In science, learners will continue to investigate matter and its physical properties. They will describe and classify matter, understand that heating and cooling can change the properties of matter, as well as how solids, liquids, and gases differ. 

Social Studies
In social studies, learners will be looking at the impact that various cultures have within a community. They will be comparing different cultural celebrations.
