Solar Eclipse Viewing Information

Please see the following message from Ms. Martin:

Hello Town Center Families,

Coming up on Monday, April 8, 2024, between the hours of 12:30 pm and 3 p.m., the DFW area will be in the path of a total solar eclipse. This phenomenon presents an incredible science educational opportunity for all students in our district. Residents in the path of this solar eclipse will not be able to see another one in their lifetimes without significant travel.

Our educators in Coppell ISD will be taking a few minutes of their day to allow students to safely witness the eclipse. Many of those educators have amazing activities and lessons planned to support learning for students in all grade levels. Viewing this eclipse in a safe manner is a priority for Coppell ISD. All students and educators will be using certified eclipse viewing glasses provided by TCE or projection techniques that don’t involve looking toward the sun.

If for any reason you do NOT wish for your child/student to participate in viewing the solar eclipse, please fill out this FORM at go.coppellisd.com/EclipseOptOut by 5 p.m. on Monday, March 25.

Otherwise, we are looking forward to providing our learners with an exciting and unprecedented learning experience.

Field Trip

We are excited for our upcoming field trip to the Heard Museum in McKinney on Wednesday, May 8th.  Detailed information and the permission slip came home Friday with your child.  Please make sure to ask them about it!  IMPORTANT: If you would like to chaperone OR are even considering it please make sure you have completed a background check for THIS school year (23-24).  It is a requirement to complete this every school year in order to volunteer at the school and chaperone on field trips.  If you are unsure as to if you have completed this for this school year, please reach out to your child's teacher.
If you still need to complete please click on the link and follow the steps:

Sonic Night

Tennis Shoes for PE & Extended Specials Day (CTT)

Please help make sure that your child wears appropriate shoes on PE days and Move & Groove (Fridays). Additionally, every other Thursday 3rd grade has extended specials during CTT. The dates are outlined for the remainder of the year below. Thank you for your help in making sure your child is safely dressed for the gym!

Smart Watches

We have noticed that more and more of our students have begun wearing smartwatches to school, so we want to take a minute to be clear about expectations for those devices.
Students are not permitted to communicate on their personal devices during the school day. (The same rule applies to their iPads.) This includes parents. Additionally, smartwatches are only to be used to tell time during the day. Please help us in reinforcing this expectation.  If you need to contact your son/daughter during the day, please email your child's teacher or call the front office.
We have talked about these expectations with the students. We've let them know that if they are using their smart watch, cell phone, or other personal devices to communicate (or use any additional feature beyond telling time), they will receive one warning. After that one warning, we will ask for those devices to stay at home.

Yearbooks for Sale

Our yearbook sale is now open! Each year we have a Town Center Yearbook that highlights photos from every class, school events, and staff. It is a great item to have to look back on memories from the year, and we even have a yearbook signing party in May. If you are interested in purchasing a yearbook, please see the graphic below for thee different purchasing options. As a reminder, the TCE Yearbook cost WAS NOT included in the TCE Trail Pass. If you would like a yearbook for your child(ren), you will need to purchase using the website link below.

Our yearbook committee would also love your help in submitting photos for the yearbook. As you attend campus events, if you have any photos you would like to share, see below for information on uploading them to our committee.

WHAT WE ARE LEARNING

ELA - Our 3rd grade STARS are taking the next few weeks to practice our comprehension and responding to reading skills as we prepare for the Reading STAAR test in April.  Through games, assessments, practice activities and small group learning, our 3rd grade readers will SHINE!

Ask your learner to tell you about the 3 types of author’s purpose we talked about this week!

Social Studies - We will continue to analyze nonfiction Social Studies articles in order to draw conclusions about what we read.  We will review using text features like charts, maps and diagrams to better understand!

Math - Well, it’s time to pack our bags, gather our souvenirs, and get our pen pal’s address because our trip to Crazy Bizarro Fraction World is coming to an end, and we’ve learned a lot. We’ve learned how to identify fractions and how fractions that don’t look alike can actually be equivalent - and everything in between. There’s nothing like coming back home and taking a test about your travels, but that’s what happens when you get to be 8 and 9 years old: next week will be the end of our fraction unit and we’ll take a post test on the topic. Please let us know if you have any questions!

Science - This week we will continue to explore different adaptations for animals.  We will look at behavioral and structural adaptations…camouflage, mimicry, hibernation and migration.

Math - Wid you know that in Crazy Bizarro Fraction World, things are not always as they seem? It’s true! Two fractions that don’t look anything alike can actually represent the same amount and be equivalent fractions. 🤯#mindblown

We teach them how to determine if two fractions are equivalent by using the fraction pieces and making simple drawings, but we also teach them to use the tried and true Butterfly Method, which still works as well today as it did in 1987, thank you very much. Have your clever child show you so you can relive your math glory days!

Science - Next week we will finish up exploring different habitats and all the amazing plants and animals found in each.  We will then look at animal adaptations and how they help them survive in their environment.

WHAT WE ARE LEARNING

ELA - Our 3rd grade STARS will be taking the next few weeks to practice our comprehension and responding to reading skills as we prepare for the Reading STAAR test in April.  Through games, assessments, practice activities and small group learning, our 3rd grade readers will SHINE!

Want to help at home?  Encourage your reader to spend some time reading each night.  Ask them to tell you about what they read!

Social Studies - Our reading to learn skills will be strengthened as we use our Article of the Week non-fiction articles to assess understanding of key concepts we have covered in Social Studies throughout the year!

Math - We are continuing to prepare for math STAAR by practicing working with all the tools and features that will be offered when they take the test online on April 25. We will work with the ruler, the highlight feature, and the notepad feature, just to name a few. We will also continue learning all about fractions; the week after Spring Break is a giant step into Crazy Bizarro Fraction World, folks! We’ve got fractions in word problems and comparing fractions, and those two concepts are an enormous jump from 2nd grade. In 3rd grade, we compare fractions that have the same denominator (⅓<⅔) and fractions that have the same numerator (⅓>⅛). Mastering the concept of how the denominator of 3 is greater than the denominator of 8 really challenges their thinking and understanding of how the size of the piece is affected when the denominator changes. We’re doing big things over here in #BHallBestHall!

Science - After Spring Break we are starting our final unit for Science…Organisms and Ecosystems!  We will begin by looking at what makes up a habitat and explore the many different types of habitats.
