Start With Hello

We are excited to launch Start with Hello Week at Town Center during September 18-22!
Program Overview
The Start With Hello program empowers students in grades K-12 to recognize loneliness and social isolation in their peers, offering effective strategies to reach out and help, and ways they can grow an empathetic and inclusive community.  The program is designed around three goals that are accomplished using the program’s framework and reinforced throughout the program cycle.
Goals
The three goals of the Start With Hello program are to teach students how to:
• Recognize loneliness and social isolation in peers.
• Help their peers who may be lonely and/or socially isolated.
• Grow an empathetic and inclusive community.
Program Framework
The goals are accomplished using our three-step program framework:
1. See Someone Alone: learn how to recognize social isolation and loneliness.
2. Reach Out and Help: learn the benefits of helping peers who are lonely or socially isolated as well as strategies to overcome the challenges.
3. Start with Hello: learn ways to help peers who are lonely and socially isolated as well as help create a more connected and inclusive community.
Check out the graphic below to learn more about how we will reinforce these skills at TCE this year!  💚

Snacks

We will have a short snack time each day, while we work, to keep our brains and bodies fueled for learning. In order to ensure a safe classroom environment for everyone, we ask that you please DO NOT send any snacks that contain peanuts/tree nuts. Please send a small, healthy snack (ex: fruit, cereal, crackers, goldfish, etc.) each day that does not require a fork or spoon to eat. Additionally, please send a water bottle with a sports (no spill) top daily.

Below are a few links regarding lunches:

- Breakfast & Lunch Menu

- Free & Reduced Lunch Application

- Create Your Child's Online Lunch Account

iPad Resources/Updates/Charging

As we start to get into our day to day routines, we will begin using our iPads daily. Please help remind your child to charge their iPad's each night! This is extremely important as we have a VERY limited amount of chargers in the classroom, as well as, charging space.

Our Digital Learning Coach, Ms. Tinch, has also shared some parent iPad resources that you might find very helpful at home:

What we are learning

Math - When the going gets tough, the tough get going and explain regrouping to their parents. In this case, the tough are the 3rd grade children, and they are gonna knock it out of the park on this subtraction with regrouping - which just means we are going to borrow. We will work on subtracting 3 digit numbers, which includes subtracting across 0s and also having to regroup the middle digit twice (both types of problems are 3rd grade skills). See the example below of both of those kinds of subtraction problems, and happy regrouping!

Science - Rollin…rollin’...rollin into our last week…of our Properties of Matter Unit!  (Did you channel your inner Tina Turner just now?) We will be exploring how materials can be combined based on their physical properties to create or modify objects such as building a tower or adding clay to sand to make a stronger brick.

ELAR - Retelling stories is the name of the game in reading class this week! We will work on the “five finger” retell strategy as well as looking to retell BIG moments from the text.  We will continue working on our small moment personal narratives while diving deep into proper nouns in grammar.

Social Studies - Not only will we be celebrating Constitution day and freedom week this week, we will continue our unit on communities by exploring the role culture plays in our lives.
