Math

Area covers, people! We will be learning all about area and words that mean area, or objects that cover. Grass, blankets, carpet, paint, wallpaper: all of these cover a space and imply that we need to find the area. What’s new for 3rd graders is that instead of counting squares inside the shape to find the area, we will use the formula for area, which is

length x width. A formula is a rule in math that we use to find the solution; there are many formulas to memorize (Pythagorean theorem, anyone?), so in 3rd, we’ll only find the area for rectangles and squares. Therefore, the only formula they have to learn this year is area = l x w. FYI, it doesn’t really matter which side they label L and W…there are differing opinions as to which is which, and due to the commutative property, we can multiply in any order anyway - IYKYK and YOLO. Area RULES!!

Science

The Sun…the STAR of our show!!  We have discussed how the Sun is the closest star to Earth.  We will now take a dive into how the Earth, Sun and Moon all work together, and around, each other!

Reading/Writing

We are continuing our study of poetry! We are learning about lines, stanzas, rhyme-scheme and free verse. We are exploring figurative language and recording our findings in our digital learning journals. We are looking for figurative language in our own reading during Reader’s Workshop and recording what we find. We are exploring similes and metaphors, hyperboles, personification and onomatopoeia (words for sounds). We are paying attention to the points of view the poems are written and will continue to explore the tone and mood of a variety of poems. We will be finishing up our persuasive writing pieces and begin experimenting with writing our own poems!

Social Studies

This week we will work on identifying reasons budgets are created. We will highlight needs in areas of saving and spending through creative role play and games. We will explore different ways of earning, spending, saving and donating money. We have an exciting digital journal to continue working on and we will dive into the digital “Game of Life”.
