We have extended our deadline for our annual campus service learning fundraiser to help support the American Heart Association. In the past five years, we have raised of $100,000 to support the organization and funded special grants to help heart surgeries and research. We are hope to reach the goal of $20,000 this year! If we reach our goal... Mr. Shelby and Dr. Applegate will have buckets of slime poured on them! You can get a “jump start” by fundraising online at www.heart.org/jump or www.heart.org/hoops.

Mark your calendars! Our 3rd grade field trip to the Frisco Sci-Tech Discovery Center will be April 5th. If you have returned your permission slip, please do so ASAP. Also if you are wanting to chaperone, please let your child's teacher know! Please make sure you have completed a background check and paid your $9 entrance fee.


PEEK AT OUR WEEK

Math: This week we will continue exploring area and perimeter. Our learners will be able to find the area of composite figures and find the perimeter of polygons. We will also be applying these skills to problem solving.

Science: This week we will be finishing up our solar system unit! We will start off our week reviewing the order of the planets. At the end of our week we will be learning about and recording day-to-day weather changes.

Social Studies: This week we will finish up reviewing nonfiction text features

Reading: This week we will continue our traditional literature unit and read different fables and folktales. We will have a nonfiction OTW this week due on Friday, 3/3.

Writing: This week we will out the finishing touches on our poetry portfolios and share with our classmates during a "poetry slam." We will begin a new spelling unit and have the post test on Friday, 3/10.


HOMEWORK

Math: Please remember that we have started a new homework routine. Your child should be coming home with a new homework page that will be due on Friday, March 3rd. Reflex Math still needs to be done 3 times a week. If you would still like to complete workbook pages, those pages for this week are 537-542 .

Reading: We will continue our new Of The Week (OTW) homework. Learners will have one activity each night, then a short comprehension quiz on Friday.

Spelling: There is no more Spelling Choice Board homework. Students are responsible for learning their words and will take the next post test Friday, March 10th, but the choice board is not part of the homework.

Math: This week our learners will be digging (literally!) into area and perimeter. We will be using our Town Center garden to help us better understand are and perimeter. We will start exploring concepts like finding the area of composite figures or find the perimeter of polygons.

Science: In science we will continue our learning about the relationship between the Sun, the Moon, and the Earth. We will begin to brainstorm the role that the sun plays on our Earth in relation to the water cycle. We will also start to measure and record day-to-day weather changes.

Social Studies: learners will review nonfiction texts. We will continue to read biographies and focus on important nonfiction reading skills, such as captions, photographs, illustrations, titles, subtitles, and facts.

Reading: learners will integrate writing to create past personal narrative reflections. We will also have a new nonfiction OTW due on Friday.

Writing: This week we will be finishing our poetry unit. They are currently creating poetry portfolios with several different types of poems that they have written! We will be sharing out our original poems during a "poetry slam" on Friday.

We will open valentines, so please send in a decorated container (either a paper sack or a shoe box) to hold all your child's cards. Please remember that classrooms are nut free (including products made in facilities that also process nut products) when sending in valentines/treats; also, please make sure there is a card for every learner in your child's class and that the valentines are already filled out before school starts that morning.

PEEK AT OUR WEEK

Science: We will be continuing our discussion of the relationship between the sun, the moon, and the Earth. To continue our learning of constructing models, we will head outside to make a model of the distance from the Earth to the sun. Students will be in the field, walking out the distance between the sun and the Earth; making models to scale is a big “step” for third graders! Students will also learn the order of the planets and begin to take regular measurements of the temperature outside.

Social Studies: Our learners are studying about individuals who have made a difference in their community by completing a biography research project.

Reading: learners will begin studying myths, legends, fables, and folktales. We will also have a new OTW that is due Friday. It will be slightly different this week because it is not a poem.

Writing: In writing, we will integrate with reading by writing poetry. They are currently creating poetry portfolios with several different types of poems that they have written!

Math: This week our learners will finish their learning on personal finance. They will explore concepts like human capital, earning an income, creating a savings, and credit. They will know what it means to make wise financial decisions for their future. 
 
Science: This week we will begin learning about the solar system! Our learners will explore scale models and we will create our own scale model of the solar system. We will also be discussing the relationship between the Earth, Sun, and Moon.

Social Studies: Our learners are studying about individuals who have made a difference in their community by completing a biography research project.

Reading: learners will begin studying myths, legends, fables, and folktales. We will also have a new OTW that is due Friday. It will be slightly different this week because it is not a poem.

Your child's teacher will send home more info about the party and the names of the children in her class as the day gets closer.

Science: In science, we will begin talking about the renewable and nonrenewable resources, as well as space!
Social Studies: In social studies, we will continue a research project about people
who have made a difference in their community. Your child should have chosen who he or she wants to do his biography research project about. We will also integrate with reading by studying biographies and autobiographies.
Reading: In reading, learners will continue their poetry writing unit. We will focus on free verse, cinquain, concrete, acrostic, limerick, haiku, and couplet.
Writing: In writing, we will integrate with reading by writing poetry.

Homework

Math- Since we are now into the second semester of 3rd grade, we started weekly math homework. They will be given the assignment every Friday, and it will be due the following Friday. We talked with the learners about planning ahead and finding a time when they can focus on getting this math homework done. The next assignment is due on Friday, February 3. Thank you for understanding and partnering with us!
Reading: We will continue our new Of The Week  (OTW) homework. This week, learners have a nonfiction text reviewing the three branches of the government. Learners will have one activity each night, then a short comprehension quiz on Friday.

Peek at Our Week:

In math, our learners will be exploring money. They will be able to count and recognize a collection of coins and bills. We will also begin discussion financial literacy and what it means to make wise financial decisions.
Science: In science, we will begin talking about soil.
Social Studies: In social studies, we will begin a research project about people
who have made a difference in their community. We will also integrate with reading by studying biographies and autobiographies.
Reading: In reading, learners will begin their poetry writing unit. We will focus on free verse, cinquain, concrete, acrostic, limerick, haiku, and couplet.
Writing: In writing, we will complete our middle of the year writing
assessments. Then, we will continue with poetry writing.

Homework
