Field Trip This Friday
Our Field Trip to the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History this Friday! We are so looking forward to exploring and learning in a new place! Here are a few quick reminders before the trip on Friday.

  1. Please make sure your child brings a sack lunch and water/drink with their name on it. Everything needs to be able to be thrown away or recycled, and peanut free! If your child will be getting a sack lunch from the cafeteria, please you child's teacher know before Friday!
  2. Your child needs to wear their green TCE 3rd Grade shirt.
  3. We will be leaving school around 8:45 and should be back to school by 2:00. Your child won’t need their binder, so they can leave their backpacks at home on this day!

Upcoming Parent Book Club

Our counselor and librarian will facilitate a parent book club this Spring in the Town Center library, and we would love for you to attend! It will be a great time to get to know and collaborate with other parents. The book study will start towards the end of March and go through April. It will be a total of five sessions, with each session lasting one hour. All participants will receive a free copy of the book, and it will be yours to keep. If you are interested in attending/learning more, please fill out the link below. This will help us pick the day that works best for everyone and gauge interest in the book club.

Our Spring Book Club Book:
Teach Your Children Well - Why Values and Coping Skills Matter More Than Grades, Trophies, or "Fat Envelopes"

Psychologist Madeline Levine brings together cutting-edge research and thirty years of clinical experience to explode once and for all the myth that good grades, high test scores, and college acceptances should define the parenting endgame. This book clarifies some of the core values and choices that are most likely to lead to authentic success rather than children that are exhausted, externally driven, and emotionally impaired children who believe they are only as good as their last performance.

Book Fair
Lions, and Tigers and Books Oh My!  Our Spring book fair is March 2nd - 6th and we would love to have parents volunteer.  Please sign up on the link below.

What are we learning?

Math
In math, we will finish our area and perimeter unit. We will practice finding the area of composite figures by partitioning, using the same formula, and the additive property of addition. We will then begin our geometry unit where we will sort and classify 2D and 3D shapes by their attributes.

Language Arts
In language arts we are continuing to explore nonfiction texts. We will overview nonfiction text features and how they help us understand what we are reading. We will also dive into main idea and focus on finding supporting details.

Science
In Science, we will finish our second ADI (argument driven inquiry). This is a student led research and investigation project. They will work together in a group to research, develop a claim, collect data, and justify their evidence to highlight a pattern between climate and latitude in countries around the world. The students have developed a claim and collected data, so our last steps will be to make an argument board and write a report. Towards the end of the week we will start our next unit.

Social Studies

In Social Studies learners will explore the difference between spending and saving.  We will discuss how saving choices effect the future.

What are we learning?

Math
In math, we will continue our Area and Perimeter unit. We will build upon our knowledge of calculating area using multiplication (A=LxW) to find the area of composite figures by partitioning, using the same formula, and the additive property of addition.

We will continue taking our multiplication fact quizzes on Mondays and Wednesdays. If all 10 facts are correct in 2 minutes, your child will be able to move on to a new quiz the next day we are testing. If they're not mastered, then that same quiz will be taken again until all 10 are correct.  Additionally, any practice with fact fluency that can be done at home is VERY helpful. Each learner has been placed on multiplication and division on Reflex Math for this reason. Flashcards at home also work.

What are we learning?

Math
In math, we will be beginning our Area and Perimeter unit.  This is a short 3-week unit where we will learn to calculate area and perimeter of rectangles using formulas. We will use multiplication (A=LxW) to teach area, and use addition to find the perimeter of rectangles. We will also learn to find the area of composite figures by partitioning and using the same formula.

We will continue taking our multiplication fact quizzes on Mondays and Wednesdays. If all 10 facts are correct in 2 minutes, your child will be able to move on to a new quiz the next day we are testing. Language Arts
In LA we are diving head first into nonfiction reading! We will be discussing the difference between nonfiction and fiction reading. We will be focusing on the structure of nonfiction texts, exploring different nonfiction text features. We will begin to introduce main idea and supporting details.

Science
In Science, the learners will finish learning about slow land changes such as weathering and erosion. We will begin learning about different types of natural resources and how to conserve them. We will also begin our career connection trade card for this unit.

Social Studies
In Social Studies we will begin our new unit on Economics.  Throughout this unit learners will be able to explore the purposes of earning, spending, saving, and donating money and will learn the concept of the free enterprise system and how businesses operate in the U.S. free enterprise system.

What are we learning?

Math
In math, we will be working through our multiplication and division choice board. Each learner will be working through different tasks on their choice board based upon their individual Schoology checks taken over the last few weeks. While students work through the choice board, teachers will be pulling small groups to reteach and re-engage based upon these Schoology checks as well. Our multiplication and division post test will take place on Friday, December 13th.

Language Arts
In language arts, we are exploring fables, myths, legends, and fairy tales. We will be adapting a classic fairy tale and writing one of our own. We will be reading various fables, myths, and legends, and discussing the theme of these works. We will be studying the overall message of stories and how it can be translated to other books that we have read.

Science
In Science, the learners will be researching rapid changes to earth's surface. We will research the causes and effects of natural disasters including volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, and landslides. The learners will make a survival guide for the natural disaster of their choice.

Social Studies
In social studies, we are starting a new geography project. Each student will research various aspects of geography in an assigned state. We will be focusing on landforms, natural disasters, and weather and climate.
