Welcome third grade families!! Thank you for taking the time to read our third grade blog. It was a great first FULL week of virtual learning in third grade! We were able to get to know one another, learn to navigate Zoom and Schoology together! Thank you so much for being patient and showing so much grace as we struggled through some technology issues. We are excited about the learning that will continue to happen in the coming weeks. Make sure you are checking our blog weekly for calendar updates, what we are learning, and any announcements regarding third grade and TCE.

Announcements

***Logging into Zoom with CISD Credentials***
Starting Monday, Aug. 31, CISD will be requiring all learners to sign into Zoom using their CISD email address. This change will allow for better classroom management and will limit disruptions in the event the meeting link is shared to people outside of the district.

If your child is using a Zoom account not associated with their CISD email address, the next time they sign in, they will need to use their CISD login information — g.coppellisd.com or newtech.coppellisd.com —  to join the meeting. We have created documentation for signing into Zoom with their CISD login information, which can be found here: https://coppellisdhelp.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360053328653.

If your learner is already using their CISD email address to sign into Zoom, they will need to consolidate their account to be managed by the district. We have created documentation for consolidating the Zoom account, which can be found here: https://coppellisdhelp.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360052551674.

Checking Grades and Comments on Schoology
We would love your help checking your child's grades on Schoology. We have explained to learners how to do this, however, an extra set of eyes is always helpful.

1. At the top of you child's Schoology home page is a red ribbon with the word "Grades". Please click that.

2. There will be a dropdown menu, please select the first option at the top, "Grade Report".

3. Once you have clicked on Grade Report, each of your child's subjects will populate for you to click on.

4. There you will see a paper icon if they have submitted an assignment, and a grade out of 3. If they have a 1 or a 2 they should go back to fix their submission. The 4 squares will take you to a rubric where you will see a comment about why they have received that score.
5. If you do not see a paper icon on the right, they have not submitted the assignment and need to do that ASAP.

Doctor's Appointments/Absences
You do not need to notify the office of any doctors appointments or absences. Any work that your kiddo misses can be completed upon their return. They will earn credit and be considered present as long as the work for the day is complete before midnight.

What are we learning?

Math: This week learners will begin to learn to round numbers. We will discuss the reasoning behind rounding and develop a conceptual understanding of rounding by looking at different numbers number lines. We will also learn the rounding rules and practice rounding to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000, and 10,000.

Language Arts: In reading, we will continue exploring predictions with the focus on providing evidence and reasoning. We will also begin discussing retelling as a comprehension check. Finally, we will be taking our iStation monthly assessment. This is provides valuable information for where your child may need extra supports, so please allow your child to complete this completely independently.

In writing, we will continue to learn about narrative writing. We will be learning about how to brainstorm ideas for narrative stories. We will take these ideas and begin writing stories.

Science: This week in science we will continue our learning about the properties of matter. We will also begin to talk about the states of matter and what they look like.

Social Studies: In social studies, we will be finishing out Communities and Culture unit by introducing a culture project. Learners will have the opportunity to create a project that showcases their culture. We will be presenting these on Zooms so that we can learn about a variety of cultures and traditions.
