ELA -

In Reading we will take our first MAP test!! We will also start to discover our reading levels. In our independent reading time we will work on writing in our reading response notebooks.

During writing and grammar we will continue our lessons on singular and plural nouns. We will finish setting up our writing binders and maybe even begin our very first story!

Math - This week we will practice our new 3rd grade skill of expanded notation and our 2nd grade skill of expanded form. Both representations tell the value of each digit. In 3rd grade, we’ll learn place value up to the hundred thousands place (last year it was the thousands place up to the number 1,200). We are excited to move on in our place value unit by continuing to decompose and compose numbers (take them apart and put them back together) with place value blocks, comparing and ordering 5 digit numbers, and learning about how each place value is related to the other. This is called the Base 10 relationship and it means we will discuss how the tens place is 10 times greater than the ones place and how the hundreds place is 100 times greater than the ones place. We’ll go through each place value and learn about its relationship to the other place values up to the hundred thousands place. You can help by using the vocabulary and saying sentences like, “The number 1,000 is 10 times greater than the number 100” and “The number 1,000 is 10 times less than the number 10,000”. Can you even believe what these 3rd graders are learning?! They’re amazing! #buildingmathematicians

Science - This week in Science we will begin our unit on Properties of Matter.  We will define what is matter and discuss what are some different properties of matter.

Social Studies - This week in Social Studies we will continue to explore how and why people form communities.  We will take a closer look at our wonderful community of Coppell.

ELA - This week in reading and writing workshop we will be working on setting up routines and procedures so that we can have a successful year. We will also be kicking off spelling and grammar with a bang!

Math - This week we are getting our math on with the amazing system of place value! You read that right, folks, place value is the interesting system that ACTUALLY REPRESENTS A NUMBER’S VALUE. Cool, right? The kiddos will be learning their place value spots to the hundred thousands place, practicing the 2nd grade skill of expanded form, and learning the 3rd grade skill of expanded notation. Here is an example of both:

Expanded form: 3,000+400+7=347

Expanded notation: (3x1,000)+(4x100)+(7x1)=347

Science - You’re a scientist, and you’re a scientist, and YOU’RE a scientist!! We’re all scientists, and that’s the point. This week, we’ll learn what a scientist is and what it means, and of course, we’ll be strapping up those super cool goggles and learning all about our third grade safety tools. So get your lab coat and let’s goooooo!

Social Studies - This week in Social Studies we are exploring why people come together to form communities.  Some of the reasons we will cover are a need for security and safety, laws, material well-being, and religious freedom.

CISD Family/Schools Relationships Survey Due by May 16th

Each semester, CISD surveys our families on their relationships with their child’s school. The Spring 2025 Family/Schools Relationship Survey is open now through Friday, May 16th. To participate, visit go.coppellisd.com/Spring25FamilySurvey, then select your child(ren)’s school. If you have multiple children in CISD, we ask that you take the survey for each school your child attends in order for the schools to have feedback that is specific to them. Campus administrators are able to view the data from each parent survey, along with district administrators.

Please email input@coppellisd.com, if you would like to share any additional feedback or insight not covered in the survey or have any additional comments to share with the district

Attendance

Background Checks

We ask that all families complete a volunteer background check at the start of the year. They do not carry over from year to year. Since the background checks take time to process, we ask that everyone complete one in case any type of volunteering opportunity (class field trip, Dad's Club, Room parent, class volunteer, field day, etc.) arises during the year that you are interested in. Please click on the link below to complete it.

ELA/SS -

During ELAR this week we will put our research skills to the test. Students will be researching a historical figure and creating a final product to showcase all that they have learned!

Math - This week in math, The Price Is Right! I talked about this show a lot during the elapsed time unit - specifically the Showcase Showdown - and the kiddos are interested. First, we will watch an episode so they can see how the show works. Then they will work on researching everyday household item amounts, practice making those amounts with pretend money, make a presentation about how much they would spend at the grocery store if the items were in their cart, and then they’ll make a game show-style Kahoot to get others in the class to guess their item amounts, just like The Price Is Right. It is going to be a hoot, and I really think they’re going to like it! On Tuesday, we’ll take our last math MAP test for 3rd grade. We’ve set goals for this test and are aiming for improvement in our score since we last took the test in the winter. Pleeease continue to help make sure that the fully charged ipad is brought to school everyday until school gets out!

Science - The long awaited Minecraft project is here! We already dipped our toes into starting it and we are jumping all the way in next week. They will be researching the climate, food sources and animals that a specific habitat has to offer. They will also be creating a new animal that could survive in that habitat and explain how its adaptations help in its survival. Then they will take all of this information and put it into Minecraft Education! Stay tuned for the final product!

ELA -

During ELAR this week we will be working on our research skills. We will read nonfiction text while learning to synthesize information. This way we can restate information in our own words while adding our own background knowledge.

Math - We will be reviewing our 3rd grade math skills with an engaging and interesting Numbers activity called Passport Math. This is a spiral review that allows the learners the chance to learn about other cultures and countries while practicing 3rd grade math. They can get their “passport” stamped, listen to instructions for France by the French teacher at CHS, and expand their world view - all while practicing math. What’s better than that?

Science - Next week in Science we will be finish up exploring food chains. We will then explore differences and similarities of a few life cycles of plants and animals.

Social Studies - Our last social studies unit will tie into ELAR as we research historical figures. Students will look at how Our past is related to the present while noticing that Heroes, scientists, entrepreneurs, and inventors have certain characteristics.
