The district has now added RAZ KIDS accounts for all elementary students in the district. With this being said, it means the old accounts we had set up just for TCE will be expiring, and new usernames and passwords will be given to students. Report Cards

Friday, October 19th, your child brought home their report card for the first nine weeks of school. If you would like more clarification for what each standard means and what it looks like for your child to met standard, approach standard, and make insignificant progress towards standard please check out the CISD standards-based report card rubrics found here. Please note that every nine weeks the same standard may be reported on but the rigor and expectations increase from nine weeks to nine weeks.Please reach out to your child's teacher(s) if you have any questions or would like clarification regarding their report card. 

Storybook Pumpkin Patch

The Town Center Elementary Library will host a Storybook Pumpkin Patch for any TCE students that would like to participate. At home, students and/or families can decorate a pumpkin to look like one of their favorite children's book characters. Students may bring their decorated pumpkin to the TCE Library 7:30-8:00am on Monday or Tuesday morning, October 29-30, 2018. The pumpkins will be on display for viewing Monday, October 29th - Thursdday, November 1st. Pumpkins must be removed from the library by 3pm on Friday, November 2nd. PTO Family Movie Night

Join us in the gym on Friday, October 26th at 6pm. Dinner, drink, and snacks will be sold starting at 6pm while supplies last. All dinner and concession items sold will benefit our PTO. Pre-register online at www.tcepto.com to guarantee your dinner and preferred choice.

What are we learning?

Math

In math, we will continue our multiplication and division unit. After talking about what multiplication is and what a multiplication chart looks like, we will continue learning about ways to represent multiplication. We will learn to represent multiplication on a number line, equal groups, arrays, and repeated addition. We will also introduce our "fact fluency" timed practice that we will be doing each week. This will not be a grade of any sort, just a way to practice and reinforce memorizing multiplication facts. 

Language Arts

In reading, learners will understand and analyze the elements and types of poetry. We will also work with our book clubs on comprehension strategies. In spelling we will cover dropping the final "e" when adding "ing" to a word.

In writing, we will begin our unit on poetry. Learners will identify sensory details and describe the imagery in poems.

Science

In science, we will finish up our discussion about various forms of energy that are present in our everyday lives. We will begin talking how position and motion can be changed by forces such as pushes, pulls, friction, and gravity. 

Social Studies

In social studies, learners will explore the different levels of government. They will be able to identify how most government officials are chosen, how they are funded, and their responsibilities.

Our TCE student council is partnering with Metrocrest Services to provide food donations for local families and senior citizens. The food drive will run October 9th-19th, and student council will have boxes at the end of each downstairs hallways that learners can place their donations in. This will be our only food drive for this year!

What are we learning?

Math

In math, we will start our multiplication and division unit. We will start by taking our pretest and graphing our results. The first week will be spent diving into what multiplication is, what a multiplication chart looks like, and how to use it. In reading, we will finish our unit on figurative language. We will look in depth at onomatopoeia and hyperboles. Towards the end of the week we will begin our unit on Poetry.

In writing, we will continue to work on sentence formation and the conventions of writing.

Science

In science, we will finish our "energy experts" research. The learners will also be presenting this research to the class. We will spend the end of the week discussing light, thermal, mechanical, and sound energy in depth. 

Social Studies

In social studies, learners will continue to look at historical documents, their purpose, and how they have shaped our nation. We will look at the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and The Declaration of Independence.

In math, learners will be finishing up our Numeracy to 100,000 unit. We will finish up our elapsed time practice and review our addition/subtraction and money skills. At the end of the week we will have our Unit Post Test.

Language Arts

In reading, we will continue our unit on figurative language. We will finish up our discussion on similes and metaphors and begin learning about personification, onomatopoeia, and alliteration.

In writing, we will continue to work on sentence formation and the conventions of writing.

Science

In science, we will begin to dig into our new unit of Force, Motion, and Energy. We will be doing a research project where students will be broken up into groups to research one specific type of energy that is present in our everyday lives. The groups will then present to the class as the "energy experts."

Social Studies

In social studies, learners will continue to look at historical documents, their purpose, and how they have shaped our nation. We will look at the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and The Declaration of Independence.

What are we learning?

Math

In math, learners will start time as part of the Numeracy to 100,000 unit. In third grade, learners are expected to tell time to the minute,  as well as calculate elapsed time. We will continue practicing addition, subtraction, and money skills in small groups and in our morning work.

Language Arts

In reading, learners will begin figurative language. We will focus specifically on Similes and Metaphors. We will discuss the impact that figurative language has on the texts and passages that we read.

In writing, we will continue to work on the conventions of writing. We will focus specifically on grammar and punctuation in writing.

Science

In science, learners will finish their career connection trade card for our Properties of Matter unit. Our career connection for this unit is Chemists. Towards the end of the week, we will begin our new unit of Force, Motion, and Energy. 

Social Studies

In social studies, learners will begin looking at historical documents. We will identify their purpose and dig into how they have shaped our nation.

Student Council Representatives
Third grade classes will have Student Council elections for their homeroom class on Monday, September 24th. The student council helps share students' ideas, interests, and concerns with teachers and school principals. They often also help raise funds for school-wide activities, including social events, community projects, helping people in need, and school reform. All students who might be interested in this responsibility are encouraged to run. We are asking that all students who would like to run prepare a speech explaining why he or she thinks they are a good candidate to represent their class on student council. After all candidates have read their speech, their classmates will vote on a student council representative for their homeroom class. We ask that candidates do not bring treats or incentives for the class, and just come prepared with their speech. We are so excited to hear some fabulous speeches from such great leaders!

What are we learning?

Math

In math, learners will continue the numeracy to 100,000 unit with the new topic of Money. We will review the value of coins and practice counting money. In third grade, learners are expected to count a collection of coins as well as dollar amounts. 

Language Arts

In reading, we will begin figurative language. We will talk reading with GRIT and use textual clues for unfamiliar words.

In writing, we will begin the process of developing a piece of writing, drafting, and revising. We will continue to work on grammar skills with mentor sentences. 

Science

In science, learners will be finishing up our Properties of Matter unit. We will finish discussing mixtures and make our own mixtures in class. We will be taking our post test over the unit, and close it out by researching careers connected to our unit of learning.

Social Studies

In social studies, learners will be able to explain how citizens impact the community and how most government officials are elected. This will go hand in hand with our classes electing a class representative for student council!

What are we learning?

Math

In math, learners will finish up estimating sums and differences. We will then move in to reviewing addition and subtraction. By the end of the week, students will practice addition and subtraction up to 100,000 using a variety of strategies including the standard algorithm.

Language Arts

In reading, we will be working on the comprehension strategy of retelling what we read. We are also working on comprehension checks and making higher level predictions. We started our Show Me Spelling program this past week and lists will soon be available on spellingcity.com for additional review.

In writing, we will be finishing up our beginning of the year writing prompt and continue with grammar talks. We are also reviewing what makes a good paragraph. 

Science

In science, learners will learn about changes in states of matter such as freezing, melting, evaporation, and condensation. We will specifically focus on evaporation and condensation through various experiments so that the students can see it first hand. We will be making observations and writing about our experiments.

Social Studies

In social studies, learners will finish up our unit on communities and cultures. They will be comparing and contrasting their culture with others in our class. Learners will also identify the basic principles of why the Constitution was created on Monday for Constitution Day.

Special Friends Day Visitor Sign Up

This year we are asking that parents fill in the link below to add the special friend that is coming with their child. This link will:

What are we learning?

Math

In math, learners will continue representing numbers (up to 100,000) in multiple ways and compare and order them based on their place value. Learners will explain the relationship in the base-ten system, and represent this relationship using expanded notation. This week, we will specifically be focusing on rounding numbers through 100,000 to the nearest ten and hundred. We will also introduce estimating sums and differences. 

Language Arts

In reading, we will continue to work on making predictions about our reading. We will also continue to track our reading.

In writing, we will continue our beginning of the year writing prompt and work on the conventions of writing. We will also begin our grammar talks. 

Science

In science, learners will focus on being able to identify and describe what makes a solid, liquid, and gas. We will examine the similarities and differences, as well as investigate examples of each. Towards the end of the week we will start to learn about changes in states of matter such as freezing, melting, evaporation, and condensation. 

Social Studies

In social studies, learners will continue studying various cultures. We will also practice comparing and contrasting them.
