Terrific Texans
Throughout the week our learners at TCE work hard at going above and beyond! When any teacher catches them standing out in a positive way they are awarded a Terrific Texan.
Congratulations to our winners this week!

Homework Club

Good news! Homework Club begins this week! On Monday, your 3rd grader will have homework to practice previously learned skills. Please have your kiddo bring back his or her completed work by Friday to earn a checkmark. A certain amount of Friday checkmarks on the Homework Club Posters will equal a future reward…stay tuned!

Background Checks

We ask that all families complete a volunteer background check at the start of the year. They do not carry over from year to year. Since the background checks take time to process, we ask that everyone complete one in case any type of volunteering opportunity (class field trip, Dad's Club, Room parent, class volunteer, field day, etc.) arises during the year that you are interested in. Please click on the link below to complete it.

Tennis Shoes for PE & Extended Specials Day (CTT)

Please help ensure your child wears appropriate shoes on PE days and Move & Groove (Fridays). Additionally, every other Thursday 3rd grade has extended specials during CTT. The dates are outlined for the remainder of the year below. Thank you for your help in making sure your child is safely dressed for the gym!

3rd Grade CTT Dates for 2025: 2/6, 2/20, 3/6, 3/27, 4/10, 4/25, 5/8

TCE Principal Newsletter

Each week Ms. Martin sends out her Town Center Principal Newsletter. Please make sure to check out all the important campus-wide announcements in the Principal Newsletter.

ELA -

We will continue to build our writing stamina through daily writing.  It can be tough for 3rd graders to sit and continuously write…and write a well developed paragraph/story.  We will also work more on identifying what an Extended Constructed Response question looks like and how to respond to it.  We will be exploring different writing samples and comparing them with the grading rubric for what is expected.

During reading this week we will continue exploring fictional elements while sharing in our read aloud - Because of Winn Dixie. We will be working towards independence on identifying cause and effect that characters have on the plot as well as elements of plot and theme. We will also use the wonderful words of Kate DiCamillo to explore figurative vs literal language.

Social Studies - In social studies this week we will be in the beginning stages of our personal finance/economics unit. We will play the game of “Life” and learn about planning, spending, and saving.

Math - Please ask your child about geometry; you’ll be so impressed! In addition to the vocabulary list below, ask them which quadrilateral is different from all the others and therefore is all alone on the island. We’ll continue to talk about quadrilateral crossovers (a square is a quadrilateral, but it’s also a parallelogram, a rhombus, and a special kind of rectangle), and we’ll also get into identifying and classifying 3D shapes. 3D shapes are fat, not flat; that third dimension of height adds some chunkiness, ya know? Our Current Geometry Vocab: attribute, polygon, angle, vertex, vertices, side, right angle, 90° angle, triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon, nonagon, decagon, hendecagon, dodecagon, congruent, parallel lines, trapezoid, parallelogram, rhombus, rectangle, square

Science -In Science we will continue to explore Natural Resources.  We will look at how they are used in Transportation and making products.

ELA -

In writing this week we will work on continuing to build our stamina through a free write.  We will also explore what an Extended Constructed Response will look like on the upcoming STAAR.  As a class, we will walk through how to identify one, what steps to take before beginning to write, and construct a response together.

During reading this week we will continue exploring fictional elements while sharing in our read aloud - Because of Winn Dixie. We will be working towards independence on identifying cause and effect that characters have on the plot as well as elements of plot and theme. Social Studies - In social studies this week we will be in the beginning stages of our personal finance/economics unit. We will play the game of “Life” and learn about planning, spending, and saving.

Math - This week is all about quadrilaterals! These polygons have 4 sides, angles, and 4 vertices. Quadrilaterals are interesting (#thingsmathteacherssay) because they can be further classified depending on their specific attributes. No need to feel your high school geometry trauma all over again; this unit is all about new vocabulary, and your 3rd grader is crushing it. By the end of this week, your kiddo will be able to tell you how a square is not just a square - it’s also a special kind of rectangle, a parallelogram, a rhombus, and a quadrilateral. Usually, STAAR 2D geometry questions involve understanding how quadrilaterals can overlap, and we’ve got it covered!
Our Current Geometry Vocab: attribute, polygon, angle, vertex, vertices, side, right angle, 90° angle, triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon, nonagon, decagon, hendecagon, dodecagon

Science -In Science this week we will explore Earth’s Resources and how humans utilize them.  We will start by looking specifically at how they are used in construction and agriculture.

ELA -

During our reading block this week, we will review point of view and character development. We will also focus on elements of plot and how actions impact the story line. We will be using the vocabulary terms cause and effect. You can use it too in your daily lives to help them understand the difference between the two.

This week in writing we will put our writing skills to use by setting some 2025 resolutions and talking about our snow day adventures.

In grammar, we will look at using coordinating conjunctions to combine two sentences.  We explore how and when to use them and how they can make our writing stronger.

Social Studies - In Social Studies we will be learning more about Martin Luther King Jr. and comparing him to some other historical figures.

Math - Because of the snow days, this week is now a combo week of finishing our function machines and starting our geometry unit. The long-awaited function machines are coming home to you on Tuesday, so make sure to set some time aside to let your child amaze and astonish you! On Wednesday, we’ll begin our geometry unit, which is interesting: it’s a math unit that depends heavily on the memorization of words versus doing actual math. There is lots of new vocabulary in this unit! This week, we’ll practice (this is a 2nd grade skill) identifying our polygons from triangles (3 sides) all the way to dodecagons (12 sides). We will also work on learning the difference between a side, a vertex, and an angle, and we will learn about new words like parallel and congruent. Something to keep in mind is that while this is a unit that we will build upon when learning about area and perimeter, and while geometry knowledge is important for STAAR, no geometry standards are assessed on the report card. Please reach out if you have any questions!

Science - In Science we will finish up our exploration on how soil is formed by focusing on decomposition and its roll in the process.
