Color Run
What is a color run? Join us on Friday, October 18th from 5:30-7:00 p.m. as our PTO hosts a fun-filled obstacle course around the TCE campus! Students and registered participants will run through exciting obstacles while being sprayed with colorful chalk!

How do we get a shirt? Every TCE learner will receive a FREE t-shirt! Parents and siblings who want to join the fun can register through the link provided. Registration is open until Thursday, October 3rd--and yes, shirts are included! Plus, your registration contributes to your student's class goals!

How can I donate? There are two ways to donate. You can donate online via the PTO website or send in cash/check with your student. Just make sure it is in an envelope and include the student's name and the teacher's name. You can also share the donation link with family and friends! The top student fundraiser in each grade will be honored with the chance to lead their grade in the run!

Hungry? Preorder pizza for the event through the PTO website! Orders must be placed by October 11th to ensure it's ready and waiting for you on event day!

Can I help out? You can help by signing up here to volunteer

Don't forget to ask your students about their class goals and prizes--this is an exciting time for our TCE family! Thank you so much for your support! 100% of your donations go directly to the PTO to fund essential activities and resources for our learners and staff. We couldn't do it without you!
Thank you!

Coppell Cares offers the Weekend Backpack Program for families who have financial need. Each Friday, learners receive a bag of snacks for the weekend. The goal of the program is to help eliminate food insecurity for children. They provide nutritious breakfast, lunch and snack items to eligible CISD children (and siblings). This weekly food program helps feed children over the weekend during the school year when they are not receiving meals at school.

If you would like your child(ren) to participate in this program, please complete the online application below.  If you would prefer a paper copy to be sent home with your child, please email TCE's counselor, Kelly Matlock, at kmatlock@coppellisd.com.  Families may sign up for this program at any time during the school year.  Deliveries will begin Friday, September 6th.  Deliveries will be suspended for Thanksgiving Week, Winter Break, and Spring Break.

Background Checks

We ask that all families complete a volunteer background check at the start of the year. They do not carry over from year to year. Since the background checks take time to process, we ask that everyone complete one in case any type of volunteering opportunity (class field trip, Dad's Club, Room parent, class volunteer, field day, etc.) arises during the year that you are interested in. Please click on the link below to complete it.

Time to flip the script! In reading we will do a 180 and switch to non fiction for several weeks. Children love non fiction text and we are going to be reading a lot of it. They are expected to identify specific text features and determine the author’s purpose or intention for its use. Understanding the reason why it was included helps us interact with the text in more intentional ways.

In Writing this week we will be putting the final touches on our Narratives and have a celebration to share all of our hard work.  We will also start to introduce our next writing focus: Non-Fiction!

In Grammar we will work on identifying and creating compound sentences.

Social Studies - This week in social studies we are continuing to study the government. Our focus will be two civic duties: voting and serving on a jury.

Math - This is the moment, this is the tiiiiime…any guesses on what song that line came from? No? Okay, the answer will be in next week’s blog and any kiddo who quietly gives me the correct answer before then gets 3 Dojo points. Anywho, this IS the moment, and this IS the time - to finish up place value. We will be taking our place value post test on Thursday, October 10. If your child will be absent on Thursday, October 10, please let me know ahead of time so I can make arrangements for him or her to take the test on Wednesday, October 9. We are cruisin’ through 3rd grade, and your child is amazing!

Science - In Science this week we will explore magnetism and gravity but with a emphasis on forces.  We will explore and discuss how magnets repel (push) and attract (pull) towards objects and how gravity is a force that pulls us toward the ground.

ELA -

Writing is a process and they have been working hard on all the stages!  In writing this week we will work on revising and editing our narrative drafts so that we can move into publishing them!

In Grammar we will work on identifying and constructing simple sentences.

This week we are reviewing our friction study. Each student will have the opportunity to practice all of the tools in their kit. We will be applying so many strategies while we read. Here a few we will revisit this week:

-Readers stop to give themselves comprehension checks by asking who, what, where questions.

-Readers think about what the text is asking them to do. They visualize to make movies in their mind, or they make a list to gather information.

- Readers make high level predictions based on background knowledge and evidence from the text.

-Readers us a variety of strategies to figure out the meaning of words they don’t know: Gist, Antonyms, Synonyms, Explanation

-Readers retell important events that happen in the story to solidify understanding

-Readers make deep connections to the text with themselves, other texts and the world

-Readers respond to text using complete thoughts and sentences that involve restating the prompt.

Social Studies - In social studies this week, we will continue our unit on citizenship. We learn lots in this unit about our civil duties as citizens. We will also begin to learn about different government structures.

Math - We have gotten thiiiiiiiis close to finishing our place value unit and are starting to look forward to taking our place value post test (right now I’m thinking it will be on Tuesday, October 8). We’ve been checking our knowledge and showing what we know on our Schoology checks. These are short (3-4 questions) checks about 1 concept. For example, all 4 questions are about subtraction, or comparing, or expanded form. This data helps me know who needs extra help with a certain concept. In addition to reteaching and helping your learner practice our 3rd grade place value skills, we will learn about estimating sums and differences this week. The rule for this is if the word problem wants to know ABOUT how many, we round first, then add (or subtract). The first nine weeks is coming to a close - wild, right? Soon we’ll be moving on to multiplication and division; what a time to be alive!

Science - This week we will begin our new unit Force, Motion and Energy…oh my!  We will kick it off by demonstrating and describing how forces (magnetism, gravity, pushes and pulls) act on an object.

ELA - We have planned.  We have discussed.  We have shared with our partners.  Now, this week they will use their planning page to write their small moment story!

In Grammar we will discuss verb tenses; past, present and future (ie. danced, dances, will dance).  We will also explore those tricky irregular verb tenses like (catch/caught, choose/chose).

During reading this week we will add to our comprehension toolkit. We are working to make deep connections with text to deepen our understanding.

Our spelling practice will focus on a few high frequency words and compound words!

Social Studies - In social studies this week, we will begin our unit on citizenship. We learn lots in this unit about our civil duties as citizens. We will also begin to learn about different government structures.

Math - As you all know, we’ve been working on rounding, which is a life skill your kiddo will need forever. We’ve talked about how rounding is all about finding the closest friendly number (a number that ends in 0). We’ve rounded to the hundreds place and to the tens place using a number line, so this week, I will teach them the rounding rules: Underline the place value you’re rounding to, go next door, ask yourself “5 or more? Raise the score! 4 or less? Let it rest!” The underlined place value gets raised or stays the same. Some children prefer to think of a number line when rounding, and some prefer to go step by step; whichever way your child prefers, I’ve got them covered! We will review the base 10 relationship this week, which means that as you move left through place values in a number, each one is 10 times more. It’s a complicated theory for 8 and 9 year olds to understand, but we will memorize this after working with place value blocks to understand. Finally, in our WPOD (#iykyk, ask your 3rd grader!), we will dip our toe into the world of financial literacy with words like withdraw, deposit, bank account, and planned/unplanned expenses! It’s a big week in 3rd grade math, so early bedtimes are a must!

Science - Next week we are wrapping up our Properties of Matter Unit with some final explorations of matter.  We will revisit how to classify matter based on its properties and how to measure, test and record the information.
