What we are learning

Math - The week is here and they are excited! After fielding approximately 1 kabillion questions about what the milk cartons and cereal boxes are for, the week of Function Machines has arrived! Our Function Machine Showcase is on Friday, at which time they will work with each other’s completed machines to try to figure out what happened when the numbers were inputted! Function Machines help us learn about Input/Output tables, which is another way to analyze data. See below for the examples of the different types of Input/Output tables. The one that’s trickiest for 3rd graders is #2, so that is what we’ll focus on during our Friday Showcase.

THANK YOU for sending in the boxes and cartons!
We’ll keep taking them to reserve our stores for next year.

Science -
We will continue taking a closer look at weathering, erosion and deposition.  We will also continue to look at Natural Resources so that we can show how important it is to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle to preserve them!

ELAR -

We will continue our character studies unit this week, making connections between characters and events within the story.  We will practice mapping a story while continuing our class reading of the Wild Robot. We will also explore the OREO strategy as they work on drafting, editing and revising a fully workshopped persuasive writing piece.

Social Studies - In Social Studies, we will be circling back to several concepts from our government unit to help our learners distinguish between types of government and their branches.

What we are learning

Math - The end of our deep dive into multiplication and division is upon us! The post test for this unit will be on Thursday, November 30, and will include 2 by 1 digit multiplication, multiplication and division word problems, identifying whether a number is even or odd, and finding the answers  to a division equation (quotient) and multiplication equations (product). That’s a wrap, folks!

Science - We will continue taking a closer look at weathering, erosion and deposition.  It’s a slooooooowwww process guys…literally!  We will also look at Natural Resources and how important it is to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle to preserve them!

ELAR - In reading we will define secondary characters in stories and identify their role in the story. This will help us to explain the plot and make deeper connections to the main character and their goal in the story.

For our writing focus, we shift to persuasive writing, and just in time for the holiday season. Don’t be surprised if your child has a very convincing Christmas list!

Social Studies - We will finish up our government unit and begin to transition to a study of Geography and maps!

What we are learning

Math - This week we are out our our multiplication and division unit by focusing on even and odd numbers and making sure they understand division word problems.  We will then spend time reviewing all of the life long skills we have learned to prepare for our post test on November 30th.

Science - Next week we will begin our unit on Earth’s Surface.  We will begin with exploring soil and how it is formed through weathering and erosion.

ELAR - In reading we will continue reading Wild Robot and exploring character development. Some of the skills we are continuing to work on include making inferences about character traits, asking questions while we read, and answering questions in complete sentences with text evidence.

As we put the finishing touches on our All About Me Flipbook, we will focus on grammar lessons throughout. This week we will revisit skills taught previously to reinforce independence.

Social Studies - Who votes? Why is voting important? What types of things do we vote for?  These are some of the questions we will be exploring as we learn about our rights and duties as voting citizens.

What we are learning

Math - We are dividing, but we’re not divided! We are all in unity with learning about representing division. It’s all about equal shares, so your kiddo is going to learn lots of lessons about how to divvy things up evenly, and we know those younger siblings out there say thank you! We say you’re welcome. Repeated subtraction (subtracting over and over until we get to zero), using a number line to show division (starting on the dividend - big number - jumping backwards by the divisor until we get to 0 and then counting those jumps), and putting items into equal groups are all ways we can represent this last but not least operation in math. We’re all around that campfire singing Kumbaya and making sure everyone has an equal share, and it’s going to be EPIC!

Science - Next week, we will take a look at weather and climate.  We will discuss the difference between the two and will explore the different instruments used to gather weather data.

ELAR - We will be transitioning from our study of informational texts back into fiction this week as we start our unit on character studies!  Ask your learners to not only describe the character’s traits, but use evidence from the text to share their thinking.  In writing, we will be completing our work on our nonfiction all about me flipbook and preparing to get started with our next writing unit!

Social Studies - How do citizens play a part in local and national government? Our 3rd graders will be working to answer that question as we look at things like being a member of a jury, voting and more this week!

We look forward to celebrating our veterans during Friday’s Veteran’s day assembly this week too!
