Math

Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives; so now, 3rd grade families, it’s time we learn about TIME. Telling time to the minute on an analog clock was a 2nd grade skill, but we will practice it. We will learn the 3rd grade skill of how to calculate time that has passed, AKA elapsed time. When I was in 3rd grade 35 years ago in Altus OK, we regrouped hours by converting them into minutes and seconds, so elapsed time may as well have been advanced calculus for as well as I understood it. Time has made us wiser, so now, it’s taught on a timeline - and it’s a cinch.  In addition, we are moving into more STAAR practice (Math STAAR is May 2), and your kiddos are doing awesome!

Science

Next week, we will take what we have learned about habitats, organisms, environments and ecosystems to work on an AR Habitat Project.

Reading/Writing

As STAAR Reading approaches, we are in review mode. Your child will be assessed in ALL ELAR areas. They will show off their comprehension skills, inference, character analysis, author’s purpose, non-fiction text analysis, and poetry.  In addition, they will be tested on revising and editing skills AND will produce written responses.  They have all been working so hard and we are so proud of their efforts. This week we will analyze data and practice through choice boards and games.

Social Studies

This week we are investigating people who have made scientific breakthroughs or created or invented new technology and we will describe the impact of these scientific breakthroughs and technologies through listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Congratulations to our first week winners: Emily, Sachee, and Max!  A new round of earning tickets will begin next week!  Keep up the great work!

Math

It’s closing time: you don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here! We are wrapping up our fraction unit, and it’s been awesome. No, I am not joking. They have rocked it, and we are so proud. Go on, ask them anything! Equivalent fractions, check! Comparing fractions, check! Butterfly method, check! We will have our post test sometime this week, and we can’t wait to see how much they have grown and improved compared to their pretest. Please let us know if you have any questions. Well done! #3rdgradecrushesfractions

Science

We will finish up our habitat research at the beginning of this week. Then we will take a closer look at animal adaptations that allow them to survive and thrive in their environment. We will also start checking in on a live web cam for the San Diego Zoo!! The kids will keep a diary (think, Diary of a Worm) about what their animal is doing and how its adaptations are helping them.

Reading/Writing

During our ELAR block the next few weeks, we will be reviewing literary concepts and practicing crucial test taking skills to include extended response to a prompt/text, short answer responses to literature and revising and editing completed work.

Social Studies

We will be identifying  individuals who have done  heroic deeds, state and national heroes and military and first responders. We will focus on product creation and research skill  as we research Hector P. Garcia, James A. Lovell, the Four Chaplains, Harriet Tubman, and Todd Beamer.

Math

It just got real, folks - equivalent fractions are upon us. The kiddos have been working on comparing fractions with like denominators and also with like numerators. Now, we move on to discuss how 2 fractions that look completely different can actually represent the same fraction. Say what now?! Welcome to Crazy Bizarro Fraction World. All the fractions live in this city that’s located in between 0 and 1 on the number line, and it’s a bizarre place: full of different rules than those that apply to whole numbers. We will learn tips and tricks (Butterfly Method and Finding ½) to help us this week, and we are getting close to winding up this unit!

Science

From the depths of the ocean to the tops of trees, we will be exploring different habitats next week.  We will look at what an organism gets from its environment in order to help it survive and thrive.  Our fabulous DLC, Ms. Tinch, created an amazing learning journal on Keynote to help facilitate our learning adventure and showcase all the information along the way!

Reading/Writing

During our ELAR block the next few weeks, we will be reviewing literary concepts and practicing crucial test taking skills to include extended response to a prompt/text, short answer responses to literature and revising and editing completed work.

Math

And now? We decompose and compose fractions. Now y’all don’t panic. That sounds hard and confusing. But we got this! Unit fractions always have a numerator of 1, and they are the most basic form of the fraction. To decompose (break apart) the fraction ⅔, you would add ⅓ + ⅓. The answer for composing   ⅓ + ⅓ would be the sum of unit fractions, ⅔. See? Easy peasy. After that, we compare fractions! Oh yeah, it just got real everybody! In third grade, we compare fractions that have the same denominators but different numerators (simply look at the numerator) AND fractions that have the same numerator but different denominators (the bigger the denominator, the smaller the piece - which means the fraction is less). We’ve GOT THIS! #3rdcrushesfractions

Science

So long to space…but not the planet song.  That will be on repeat for quite some time!  Lol!  Our feet are back on the ground on Earth as we begin our final unit: Environments and Organisms.   We will start by looking at what an Ecosystem is and made up of.

Reading/Writing

During our ELAR block the next few weeks, we will be reviewing literary concepts and practicing crucial test taking skills to include extended response to a prompt/text, short answer responses to literature and revising and editing completed work.

Social Studies

We will be identifying  individuals, including Pierre Charles L'Enfant, Benjamin Banneker, and Benjamin Franklin, who have helped to shape communities. Each week for the next few weeks we will be highlighting different influential people based on a theme. This week’s theme is community shapers.

Math

Direct quote from a child during our fraction introductory week: “Fractions are easy!” YES! That’s what we like to hear! 😊Fractions ARE easy.

We will be working on fractions on a number line, and here’s the saying they will all remember: Count the spaces, not the lines. We will also work on partitioning amounts into equal shares, fraction word problems, and decomposing fractions into unit fractions. Now, don’t panic, friends. That all sounds complicated, but you’ve (your child) got this!

Science

Next week we will deep dive into our planets.  They will spend the week researching each planet and finding all the fun facts!

Reading/Writing

During Reading this week we will continue to dive into the mystery novel each class selected.  We will focus on the skills required to make inferences, evaluate details to determine key ideas, and actively listen to clarify information and make pertinent comments.

Our 3rd grade writers will continue writing poetry of a wide variety. We will be showcasing these during open house!

Social Studies

Next week we will finish up our economics unit and move into our study of individuals who have shaped our community. We will focus on key people in history that have made contributions through inventions and their upstander behavior.
