September 13th-17th

Upcoming Dates

October 7th - Early Release

October 8th and 11th - No School

iPads

Please help your child remember to charge their iPad each night.  Now that we are getting into swing of things with school, we will be using the iPads more and it is important that they come to school with it already charged.

Math

NWEA Map testing will take place Monday; for anyone who isn’t finished, it will carry on over to Tuesday. As for our math content, we are rollin’ rollin’ rollin’ into rounding! First, we will look at the number line to assist us with rounding. The point of rounding is to help us get to the closest friendly number, which is a number that ends in 0. Sometimes kiddos just don’t understand what they’re doing when they round. We’re finding those close friendly numbers! We will also teach the steps to rounding: 1. Identify your place. Underline it. 2. Go next door. 3. Ask that neighbor “Are you 5 or more or 4 or less?” If the neighbor digit is 5 or more, we “raise the score” of the underlined number. If the neighbor digit is 4 or less, we “let it [the underlined number] rest”. We love a good rhyme in 110B!

Science

Next week in Science, we will continue to explore properties of matter.  We will focus on length/distance and weight/mass.  We will also identify the states of matter (solid, liquid, gas). We will also doing our Science MAP on Friday 9/17.

Reading/Writing

Next week in reading, we will be overviewing retelling as well as introducing higher level predictions and how to challenge our thinking with giving ourselves comprehension checks. In writing, we will dive into learning how to come up with ideas and begin writing narrative stories.

Social Studies

Next week in Socials Studies, the kids will be working on a Culture Project.  This is where they will be able to showcase all the wonderful, special things that are unique to your family!  Please take a minute to help your child fill out the following form.  This will be helpful for them when working in class next week.  I am including the link here, but I have also made the form available in Schoology in their Social Studies course.  My Culture Doc

September 7th-10th

Book Fair

T-Shirts

If you have not yet ordered your 3rd grade spirit shirt, you can do so my using this link here:
We will wear these shirts for Field Trips and Field Day.

Water Bottles

Please make sure your child packs a water in his or her backpack! The office only has little cups for them to fill up if your child needs water during the day.

Breakfast

If your child would like to eat breakfast at school please make sure they are here as close to 7:20 as possible. They will eat in the cafeteria and then head down to class. We begin our lessons at 8:00 and don't want them to miss out on any learning.

Math

Comparing and ordering numbers is next on our list, and our job as math judges will be important. We will accept the challenge and use our place value knowledge to determine the greatest and least numbers - but don’t worry. We won’t be hurting any numbers’ feelings; of course we’ll only determine a number is greater or less based on the amount it represents, not its outward appearance. Which number is greater? Which number is less? Put these numbers in order! Are these numbers in order? Yes! No! It’s a big job, but your 3rd grade mathematicians can handle it!

Science

We will begin our unit on Properties of Matter.  We will begin with exploring density with a Sink or Float experiment.  We will also work on determining the length of objects using both customary and metric measurements.

Reading/Writing

Next week we will begin thinking about our reading. We will talk about how to give ourselves comprehension checks, and will introduce making predictions. On Thursday 9/9, we will be taking our 3rd grade reading MAP test!

Social Studies

We will continue our discussion about why people form communities.  We will look at the evolution of transportation, religious freedom, and recreation (places we go to for fun!). On Friday, we will have a lesson that recognizes 9/11 and the heroes of that day.

Math

You guys, we are about to really get down with that wonderful, genius system we all know and love called PLACE VALUE! We have discussed different ways to represent numbers including standard form, Base 10, expanded form, and expanded notation! Well, if that has you excited, you will simply adore the Base 10 relationship, which articulates that every place value is ten times more than the place value on the right. For instance, the tens place is TEN TIMES MORE than the ones place! Amazing! We will also be composing and decomposing numbers. Decomposing numbers means we will make numbers in different ways. For instance, you can make the number 47 different ways: 47 ones, or 4 tens 7 ones, or 2 tens and 27 ones...the list keeps going and going. This is called making exchanges. All of this place value talk is getting us ready for addition and subtraction with regrouping, and I for one, cannot wait.

Science

In Science we will spend next week looking at the weather in 2 different cities, Coppell and Santiago, Chile.  We will look for similarities and differences in the weather in the 2 areas.  We will continue to look at the weather in these 2 cities over the next few months to learn about the difference between weather and climate.

Reading/Writing

In Writing next week we will be focusing on our writing stamina!   We will be spending time working on what it looks and sounds like during our independent writing time.

In reading we will be discussing how to find good fit books as well as how to set appropriate goals.

Social Studies

In Social Studies, learners will be discussing why people form communities.  I have asked the kiddos to talk with you this weekend about why you choose Coppell (or a surrounding city) to live in.  We will share about it on Monday.

Virtual Learners
A field day bag should have come home with your child when they were up at school for their STAAR testing.  Please let your child's teacher know if they didn't receive one.  During our Field Day time there will a folder in their PE course on Schoology that will explain what to do with the items in the bag.

Face to Face Learners
The kids will be rotating through stations that have been set up by our wonderful Coach T and Coach Fidler.  While some of the stations will have some water activities, it is nothing that will require them to wear a swimsuit.  However, you might want to send in a change of clothes just in case your child wants/needs to change.

Board Game time on Monday
Kids are welcome to bring a game from home to play with friends on Monday afternoon.  No technology (iPad, computer, etc) games please.

Roll Up and Read on Tuesday
Kids are welcome to bring a blanket and small pillow to get comfy with.  They just need to be able to easily care it on their own!  While they will be allowed to read on EPIC, if they want an actual book they will need to bring some from home since the library is closed for checking out books.

iPad Charging
Please ensure that your child is plugging in their iPad when they get home and charging it overnight. We have had an issue with a large group of learners in each class coming to school with their iPad dead. This makes charging at the same time hard and distancing even harder. We would love your help with iPads arriving at school charged.

What are we learning?

Math: We are bringing the heat in math this week with a review that is on fire! Using the heat maps from the math practice STAAR administration, learners will choose the 3 areas where the most growth is needed. They will spend the week reviewing those topics, and math teachers will be pulling small groups that target these skills. Things will be turned in throughout the week, and please make sure your virtual learner is checking his messages on Schoology so he can see if he’s needed in that day’s small group(s). We are on fire in 3rd grade math!
This is the last week (week 3) of Math Club! Math Club Week 2 Lunch Bunch is rescheduled to this week because of weather (so many kiddos participated we have to eat outside!)

Language Arts: With the week before STAAR we will be prepping the kids with all the tools and strategies necessary so that they feel confident going into the testing day.

Science: We will be taking a closer look at animals and their habitats.  We will focus on how animals specific body parts and adaptations help them to survive in their environment.

Social Studies: In Social Studies, the learners will be presenting on their historical figure that they have been researching.  Last week they created an infographic and they will use that the showcase their individual while presenting.
