Optional Parent Conference
As we enter the last nine weeks, I want to be sure you know that we're here if you have any questions or if you would like to touch base about your son/daughter's progress. By now you've had a chance to view the third nine weeks report card and winter MAP assessments. If you have any questions, we would like to extend the offer to speak with your learner's teacher via phone call or Zoom. This is completely OPTIONAL

iPad Charging
Please ensure that your child is plugging in their iPad when they get home and charging it overnight. We have had an issue with a large group of learners in each class coming to school with their iPad dead. This makes charging at the same time hard and distancing even harder. We would love your help with iPads arriving at school charged.

HEADPHONES!
We have lots of kiddos who have lost/broken headphones. Please make sure that your child has a working pair of headphones for school.

What are we learning?

Math: Well, try not to be too sad, but our Crazy Bizarro Fraction unit is coming to a close this week. We will be reviewing all things fractions, including but not limited to: representing fractions on a number line, on fraction circles, and on fraction rectangles. We will review fractions in a set, unit fractions, decomposing fractions, and composing fractions. We are going to rediscover the magic of equivalent fractions. And finally, everyone's favorite (read: Butterfly Method), comparing fractions with the same denominator and comparing fractions with the same numerator. ALL FRACTIONS, ALL THE TIME!!

Math Club (aka optional math homework) will get started this week, so be on the lookout for that email. Your child should be bringing home a completed math paper each Friday called First 5 Minutes, so feel free to ask them about that on Fridays.

Language Arts: In reading we are going to be going over our practice reading STAAR. We will read the passages together as a class and work on answering the questions. We will focus on the most challenging questions and how they are worded.

Science: We will look at environmental changes; what causes it to happen and what is the result after.  We will take a closer look at specifically coral bleaching and deforestation.

Social Studies: In Social Studies, the learners will continue working on their research project for their historical figure.  They will be looking into their individuals family, what they are most known for, and ways they have impacted their community.

Math: Fractions! This week is full of fraction fabulousness! We will review our fraction tricks - The Butterfly Method and Whatever You Do to the Top, You Do to the Bottom - and we will compare fractions with the same numerator and different denominators. We are starting a Math Club - there will be more information coming about that through an email - and we will continue with our STAAR questions.

Language Arts: In reading we are going to kick off STAAR prep! We will help the learners become oriented with the STAAR testing app and discuss test taking strategies.
In Writing, we will be focusing on identifying prepositions.  We will also work on building up our writing stamina by aiming to write for 15-20 minutes.

Science: In science, we will begin discussing food chains.  We will explore how a food chain shows the flow of energy within an ecosystem, how changes in a food chain affect the ecosystem and that producers and consumers describe different roles within a food chain.

Social Studies: In Social Studies, the learners will begin a research project on a historical figure.  They will dive into learning about this individual and how they influenced and shaped their community.

Math: You thought last week's math was awesome? Well, get ready, because this week is going to fraction-fabulous! We're continuing to work with equivalent fractions and starting to compare fractions. This week we'll work on comparing fractions with the same denominator. When learning about comparing these types of fractions, we will use fraction strips and models, but don't you worry! We will definitely continue to practice the Butterfly Method, which really amazed all the children: It. Works. Every. Time. If your child is a virtual learner and didn't get paper copies of the fraction strips or equivalency chart, please let your child's teacher know. We are happy to print them and have you come up to school to pick them up.

Language Arts: In Reading the leaners will continue working in their reading club groups and discuss inferencing. In writing, we will discuss the 5 things that a sentence must have/be in order to be complete: Subject, Predicate, must make sense, capital letters and punctuation.

Science: In science, the leaners will be exploring different habitats.  They will focus on 2 that they want to learn more about.  They will explore the plants and animals within those habitats and will then compare and contrast their habitats.

Social Studies: In Social Studies this week we will be learning about Cyrus McCormick and his invention of the mechanical reaper.  The learners will explore how his invention affected the lives of farm workers.

What are we learning?

Math: In math, the real fun begins as we start to learn all about equivalent fractions! We will learn how "tricky 1/2" has many equivalent fractions, how fractions that look different can actually represent the exact same amount, and a few tips and tricks to help us find equivalency quickly. Buckle up and get ready to ride the train all the way to Crazy Bizarro Fraction World!

Language Arts: In language arts we are starting our book clubs! Learners will meet with their groups on Tuesday and Thursday. They will prepare to  answer discussion questions with their groups and will practice communication skills during their meetings. In class, we will be overviewing prefixes and suffixes. In writing we will begin discussing editing and editing marks.

Science: In science, we will be starting our new unit on Environments and Organisms.  We will begin by exploring physical characteristics of environments.  Learners will focus on habitats and ecosystems: what they are and what makes them up.

What are we learning?

Math: In math, we will continue to compose and decompose fractions. We will continue to study unit fractions (building block of fractions, the numerator is always 1) and the sum of unit fractions (when we add the unit fractions).

Example: 1/4+1/4+1/4=3/4

1/4 is the unit fraction
When we have 3/4, the fraction is composed. To decompose it, we break it into unit fractions: 1/4+1/4+1/4

Also, we will finally use our fraction strips that we've cut out! Finally, we will review subtraction with regrouping (borrowing).

Language Arts: In writing, we will be finishing up our poetry unit while also writing about our Spring break. In Reading,  we are going to kick off a new reading clubs unit! We will talk about how we can prepare for and participate in reading clubs.

Science: In science, we will be finishing up our Patterns in the Sky unit.  Learners will complete their next Career Connections Trade card, as well as, take the end of unit assessment.

Social Studies: In Social Studies, learners will use the product that they created to make an advertisement for it.  They will learn what makes an advertisement appealing (font, color, pictures, prices).

Language Arts: In reading and writing, we will be finishing up our poetry unit. We will analyze the author's voice and tone and how that connects to the mood of the poem. We will look deeper at the meaning of poems and author's purpose. We will also discuss the importance of adding lines and stanzas in our own poems, as well as mixing up our word choice to add to the imagery in our poems.

Science: In science, we will continue our planet research. Each student will be creating a Google Slideshow to showcase what they have learned about the planet that they chose. At the end of the week they will have the opportunity to share their slideshow with the class.

Math: In math, we will be starting our fractions unit. We will begin by learning a variety of ways to represent fractions including circle models, rectangle models, number lines, and parts of a set. Please remember to pick up the fraction materials as well as the practice STAAR test we will be using in class starting next week. These are in a basket labelled 3rd grade pickup at the front door of the school.
