Reading and Word Work -

In Reading class this week, we will continue our interactive read aloud of Frindle, by Andrew Clements.  Our readers will practice context clues strategies - what to do when you come to a word you don’t know as a reader.

Our word work pattern this week is to explore vowel patterns that make the long o sound. We will practice reading and writing words like load, shadow and almost.

Writing and Grammar - Our super writers have begun the process of writing a personal narrative.  This week, they will continue the brainstorming process and begin drafting  their small moment story.

The grammar skill this week is using pronouns to substitute for nouns.  Ask your child which pronouns we use when writing a personal narrative.  They should be able to tell you!

Math - Okay, parents! Regrouping! Status check: how are we? Do we know what that means and how to do it? Please have your kiddos show you how to do this problem: 532-184. Have them draw the place value blocks and show you what “borrowing” really means. We are regrouping that greater number on top so that we can use the algorithm to subtract. BIG BIG things happening up here in 3rd grade math! Your child might not have mastered this skill yet, but he or she should be able to show you some progress. We will continue to practice addition and subtraction this week, but the numbers will be in the context of word problems that have to do with buying camping supplies, football and baseball cards, and carnival food. Corndogs, anyone?

A big skill for Monday will be subtracting across zeros; for example 1,000-629. They’ll learn how to deal with all those 0s in that top number, and it’s going to be a party. We’re here for it!

Science - In Science we will use our knowledge of properties of matter to start exploring the different states of matter…solid, liquid and gas!  We will look at what properties each state has and what the molecules that make up each are doing.

Social Studies - Next week we will explore cultures and customs! What better way to learn about different cultures, than to have the kids teach us about theirs!  Each learner will work on an in class project that highlights their culture.  They are coming home with an Interview sheet.  The purpose of this is so that they can talk with you about it beforehand and will have the information already written down for them to use.  We also sent the same page home in a separate email.

Here are a couple of pictures of our 9/11 Remembrance posters from this week:

Homecoming Parade - TCE float information

The Coppell Homecoming parade is NEXT WEEK and we need your help! We're looking for students and parents to walk the parade route and to wave and pass out candy with our float!

If your kiddo wants to participate, please make sure they have a parent present to walk with them.

The parade route is 1 mile long, so please be sure your kiddo can walk the entire length. We will have limited spots for younger kiddos on the float.

🪩 When? Wednesday, September 10th at 5:30PM for line-up (Parade starts at 6:30PM)

🪩Where? Elementary float line up is inside Buttonwood Court, near Cottonwood Creek Elementary (CCE). We don't know EXACTLY where our float will be, so look for the TCE banner and group!

** Parade ends at CHS at 7:30PM so please plan accordingly!**

Parkway will be BUSY so it's best to take Sandy Lake -> N Coppell Rd -> Minyard Dr to get to the CCE area. Early arrivals may find parking near CCE, but later arrivals may need to park at CHS (end of parade) and walk over to CCE.

🪩What? Candy will be provided by PTO to be handed out (not thrown) along the parade route. Float theme is "Tropic like it's hot: Splash into Coppell Hoco 2025!" So you can dress like that or wear any TCE/Coppell attire!

It will be a great evening and if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out!

Reading and Word Work -

In Reading class this week, we will continue our interactive read aloud of Frindle, by Andrew Clements.  Our readers will practice retelling  longer texts as they go, building on their retell the more I read. Through a combination of partner reading and independent reading, tackling more complex texts will be a breeze!

Our word work pattern this week is to explore words containing a long a or long e sound. By learning more about syllable types, we will practice reading and writing words like delay, paint and dream.

Math - Who’s ready for some addition and subtraction?! Once again, we’re learning a skill we’ll use forever; what’s more exciting than that?! In 2nd grade, your child learned how to add and subtract across 2 digits, and now he’s ready for more. We will add that third digit so they can practice regrouping. Now, I know you are reading that word “regrouping” and thinking some rage-y thought about “new math”, but fear not! Regrouping is the same thing as saying “borrow” and “carry the one”. We will start by using place value blocks, and by the end of the week your child will be using the standard algorithm, which means she’ll line up the place values and subtract. We will touch on subtracting across zeroes (for example, 500-127=), but we’ll work more on that during the week of September 15-19. Please see the pictures below to understand what regrouping (aka borrowing) in subtraction really means:

Science - In Science we will finish up exploring properties of matter.  Our explorations this week will challenge the kids to observe, test and measure using what they know about matter.   We will review what mass, magnetism, density and temperature are and how to test for each..

Social Studies - In Social Studies we will do a mini research on an individual who has impacted their community.  Additionally, Thursday is 9/11 so we will take time to explore the history behind what occurred and why.

Guest Speaker, September 2nd

A message from our Librarian, Mrs. Mancuso
Hi TCE families,

We are lucky to have Ryan Agarwal,  a Coppell High School graduate and current Stanford student, come to TCE on September 2nd and speak with our 2nd - 5th graders.  Ryan was recruited to play basketball for Stanford, and his dream of playing in the NBA is motivated by his love for the game and desire to break the stereotype that Indian people can't be great at basketball.

Ryan will sign copies of his book if any learners purchase his book and bring it to school on Tuesday, September 2nd.

ELA -

This week in English Language Arts we are diving deeper into our daily routine.

We will introduce word work with a preview of how it will operate during the school year.

We will also continue our read aloud, Frindle, and explore the elements of fiction literature. Good readers practice comprehension checks, write about their reading, visualize what is happening in the story and make predictions with text evidence to support their thinking.

Our grammar focus for the week is how to identify and capitalize proper nouns in context. We will be building editing practice into our daily routine.

Our writing focus this week will be two parts. One focus will be writing about our reading. Then we will begin to write small moment personal narratives. If you want to help your child, remember that all good writing starts with good story telling. Writing small moment stories can come from things like, “Hey, remember that time we accidentally used the wrong pizza pan and grease dripped all over the bottom of the oven? There was smoke everywhere!” or "Everytime my brother goes to Tappy’s Yogurt shop he always makes the funniest ice cream combinations.” The more our kids tell cohesive stories outloud, the better writers they become.

Math - I know you’ll agree with me when I say that rounding is such an interesting topic for 8 and 9 year olds to learn, 😀and here’s why: the best way for the kiddos to practice rounding is to think about where these numbers are located on a number line, and I’m here to tell you that there are a loooooot of numbers out there for them to imagine. To help narrow down our choices, we think about what multiple of 10, 100, or 1000 (aka “friendly numbers”) the number is closest to. You can help us by using vocabulary at home that reinforces rounding and by casually rounding numbers. I assure them that rounding is a lifelong skill and try to get them pumped about how, right this very moment, they’re learning a skill that adults use all the time and that they’ll use for the rest of their lives. What more exciting than that? Nothing! What a time to be alive!

Science - This week we will explore some different properties of matter through EXPERIMENTATION!  We will take a closer look at magnetism and density and how to test for each.

Social Studies - This week we will look at how individuals in history have helped shape our communities.  After learning about a variety of individuals they will choose 2 to highlight through a compare and contrast.
