A message from our Librarian, Mrs. Mancuso
Hi TCE families,
We are lucky to have Ryan Agarwal, a Coppell High School graduate and current Stanford student, come to TCE on September 2nd and speak with our 2nd - 5th graders. Ryan was recruited to play basketball for Stanford, and his dream of playing in the NBA is motivated by his love for the game and desire to break the stereotype that Indian people can't be great at basketball.
Ryan will sign copies of his book if any learners purchase his book and bring it to school on Tuesday, September 2nd. https://a.co/d/6WRgjY5.
If you have any questions, please email Kate Mancuso at kmancuso@coppellisd.com

Thursday, September 4th - Curriculum Night ELA - This week in English Language Arts we are diving deeper into our daily routine.
We will introduce word work with a preview of how it will operate during the school year.
We will also continue our read aloud, Frindle, and explore the elements of fiction literature. Good readers practice comprehension checks, write about their reading, visualize what is happening in the story and make predictions with text evidence to support their thinking.
Our grammar focus for the week is how to identify and capitalize proper nouns in context. We will be building editing practice into our daily routine.
Our writing focus this week will be two parts. One focus will be writing about our reading. Then we will begin to write small moment personal narratives. If you want to help your child, remember that all good writing starts with good story telling. Writing small moment stories can come from things like, “Hey, remember that time we accidentally used the wrong pizza pan and grease dripped all over the bottom of the oven? There was smoke everywhere!” or "Everytime my brother goes to Tappy’s Yogurt shop he always makes the funniest ice cream combinations.” The more our kids tell cohesive stories outloud, the better writers they become.
Math - I know you’ll agree with me when I say that rounding is such an interesting topic for 8 and 9 year olds to learn, 😀and here’s why: the best way for the kiddos to practice rounding is to think about where these numbers are located on a number line, and I’m here to tell you that there are a loooooot of numbers out there for them to imagine. To help narrow down our choices, we think about what multiple of 10, 100, or 1000 (aka “friendly numbers”) the number is closest to. You can help us by using vocabulary at home that reinforces rounding and by casually rounding numbers. I assure them that rounding is a lifelong skill and try to get them pumped about how, right this very moment, they’re learning a skill that adults use all the time and that they’ll use for the rest of their lives. What more exciting than that? Nothing! What a time to be alive!
Science - This week we will explore some different properties of matter through EXPERIMENTATION! We will take a closer look at magnetism and density and how to test for each.
Social Studies - This week we will look at how individuals in history have helped shape our communities. After learning about a variety of individuals they will choose 2 to highlight through a compare and contrast.
