Curriculum Night

Thank you to all our families who were able to make it out to curriculum night! We loved sharing with you all that we are learning in 3rd grade. Start With Hello

We are excited to launch Start with Hello Week at Town Center during September 18-22!

Program Overview

The Start With Hello program empowers students in grades K-12 to recognize loneliness and social isolation in their peers, offering effective strategies to reach out and help, and ways they can grow an empathetic and inclusive community.  The program is designed around three goals that are accomplished using the program’s framework and reinforced throughout the program cycle.

Goals

The three goals of the Start With Hello program are to teach students how to:

• Recognize loneliness and social isolation in peers.

• Help their peers who may be lonely and/or socially isolated.

• Grow an empathetic and inclusive community.

Program Framework

The goals are accomplished using our three-step program framework:

1. See Someone Alone: learn how to recognize social isolation and loneliness.

2. Reach Out and Help: learn the benefits of helping peers who are lonely or socially isolated as well as strategies to overcome the challenges.

3. Start with Hello: learn ways to help peers who are lonely and socially isolated as well as help create a more connected and inclusive community.

What we are learning

Math - Next station up for the Place Value Train iiisssss ROUNDING, and we are rolling right along, folks! Kiddos often get bogged down in the details and rules of rounding and forget the big picture: they’re trying to find the closest friendly number, or number that ends in a 0. In addition to rounding, we’ll work on addition - see what I did there - and subtraction. Now, friends, I’m gonna throw out a “new math” term (also what was wrong with the old math?), but don’t panic - I’ll translate into old school: the term is regrouping, and the translation is carry the 1 (addition) and borrow (subtraction). That’s familiar, right? It’s a new skill for 3rd graders, but only because they’ve never used it with 3 and 4 digit numbers or across 0s, so we start from the beginning. It’s a big week, jam packed with 2 math skills they’ll use for the rest of their life! What’s better than that? Answer: nothing. #thingsmathteacherssay

Science - This week we will continue exploring changing states of matter.  We will spend a day focusing on each: Freezing, Melting, Evaporation and Condensation.   The best way to explore this is with some hands-on learning!  We will be conducting experiments to explore these changes and what causes them.

ELAR - Our readers will dive into the comprehension skills of prediction and retelling fiction stories this week.. As your learner is reading at home, ask them to tell you about what they read and what predictions they made before and during their reading!  

In writing, we will continue writing our personal narrative stories that were inspired by a special place. This week, we will learn about how to create introductions that “hook” the reader and the elements of a solid conclusion!

Social Studies - In social studies we are still in our community unit. We are exploring the different functions of community characteristics and how cultures play a role in community development.

Throughout the week our learners at TCE are working hard at going above and beyond! When any teacher catches them standing out in a positive way they are awarded a Terrific Texan. In order to ensure a safe classroom environment for everyone, we ask that you please DO NOT send any snacks that contain peanuts/tree nuts. Please send a small, healthy snack (ex: fruit, cereal, crackers, goldfish, etc.) each day that does not require a fork or spoon to eat. Additionally, please send a water bottle with a sports (no spill) top daily.

As we start to get into our day to day routines, we will begin using our iPads daily. Please help remind your child to charge their iPad's each night! This is extremely important as we have a VERY limited amount of chargers in the classroom, as well as, charging space.

What we are learning

Math - In math, we are continuing on that Place Value Train, choo, choo!! We will be identifying where numbers go on the number line in order to help solidify our number sense. This will zoom us perfectly into Rounding Station, where the 3rd graders will learn the lifelong and important new skill of rounding. The Texas objective (TEK) states that the  student is expected to round whole numbers, and our place value unit extends to 120,000, so students should be able to round up to that number. Sometimes these angels get all caught up in the rules of rounding and they forget that it’s really just all about getting close to that number that ends in a 0, or a friendly number (we love a number that ends in a 0, #amiright). So here we go! The wheels on the train go round and round!

Science - We will finish up exploring different properties of solids, liquids and gases.  Then a change is coming…in states of matter that is!  This week we will begin to explore changes in states of matter and what causes them.  Up first is….(drumroll please…) Solid → Liquid.

ELAR - In Reading this week, we continue working as thinkers while we read to understand the meaning of text.  We will learn about cause and effect and how to use text clues to visualize as we read. Our writer’s workshop has begun and we will continue crafting personal stories using small moments. 

Ask your child:

• to tell you what is happening in our read aloud mentor text, The Wild Robot.

•  to tell you who the important person they chose to write a story about is and which small moment they chose to write about!

Social Studies - In social studies we are continuing to explore the ins and out of what community means. We are branching out to our Coppell community. As we do that this week, you can support your child by pointing out key places that play a role in your daily lives and routines.

What we are learning

Math - It’s a vibe, y’all - a place value vibe! What an ingenious system: we can understand the value of a number just by looking at the location of the digits inside that number. Amazing! In third grade, we will learn place value to the hundred thousands place, and last week, we reviewed the 2nd grade skill of expanded form  and applied it by practicing it with numbers up to the hundred thousands. Writing numbers in standard form sounds very fAHNcy, but really it means “hey pal, just write the number”). This week we will learn and practice the new 3rd grade skill of expanded notation, and we will begin placing numbers on a number  line to get comfortable with rounding. Our number sense game - the basis of all math - is STROOOOONG.

Science - Always question, always wonder…Science is off and running!  This week we will start exploring our Properties of Matter Unit.  We will be asking What is matter, What are the properties of matter, and how can we classify matter.

ELAR - What do third grade readers and writers look like, act like and sound like?  

📚This week in Reading, we will continue building our reading lives through practicing our reading routines and expectations in the classroom. We are practicing choosing “good fit” books,  making connections as we read, and responding to reading.

📝This week in Writing, we will continue to brainstorm topics using our heart map and topics lists, practicing our writer’s workshop expectations and expanding on our ideas.

Ask your learner:

•  to show you the space they prepared at your house for reading.  How does it help them to prepare for reading? 

• what they placed in their heart map during our writing workshop! 

Social Studies - Our first unit is Social Studies all about building community.  We are finding things we have in common with our classmates so we can start with a strong classroom community. Ask you kids about who in their class they have found connections with!
