Make A Child Smile
Elementary School Night @ Coppell Cowgirls Volleyball

Reading and Word Work - In reading we will aim to finish our read aloud, Frindle. We will be able to complete our plot mountain as well as continue with our fiction comprehension strategies. This week we will review the author's purpose from 2nd grade. We will add a new layer as we explore the author's intention with word choice or event.
Our word work pattern this week is to explore vowel patterns that make the long i sound. We will practice reading and writing words like slight, idle, identify, and iris.
Writing and Grammar - Our authors have written captivating hooks to start their stories as well as outlined the main events. This week we will learn how to conclude their story. We will also work on the middle parts of the writing process which include drafting, revising and editing.
The grammar skill this week is using pronouns to substitute for nouns. We will work on identifying the nouns that precede the pronoun (the antecedent) and making sure they match!
Math - Solve those problems, baby! We are working this week to solve all the (math) problems, and we’ll use a variety of strategies, including diagrams and number lines. We’ll break apart (decompose) numbers to strengthen our mental math, and we’ll estimate our answers to strengthen our understanding of deciding if our potential answers are reasonable. Can you even believe your amazing 3rd grader? The “diagrams” aren’t pictures; they’re strip diagrams, and these are all over the STAAR test. I know this phrase positively SCREAMS “new math”, but don’t worry, we’ve got your back. See an example of a strip diagram below:

Strip diagrams help students visualize what is happening in the word problem, and they look different for each operation in math (for example, addition diagrams look different than subtraction, multiplication, and division diagrams). This is a subtraction strip diagram because we have the total of 250, and we need to find one of the parts: the part with the question mark is missing, so we need to subtract 250-143. Your kiddo is going to get so good at these, and you’re going to be amazed at their solid numeracy skills. As the teens say, “I didn’t know he had this in his bag.” But we knew all along, because TCE 3rd grade math is where it’s at!
Science - In Science we will take our knowledge of the states of matter (solid, liquid, and gas) to the next level with (drum roll, please)..Changing States of Matter (ooooh aaaaaaah)! We will start exploring what causes a substance to change states and why.
Social Studies - Next week in Social Studies the kiddos will be the teacher! We will be taking time to have each learner share their culture. We love this moment because it is such a great way to learn about all the different cultures in our classroom and gives a sneak peek into what makes your child unique and special!
