Background Checks

We ask that all families complete a volunteer background check at the start of the year. They do not carry over from year to year. Since the background checks take time to process, we ask that everyone complete one in case any type of volunteering opportunity (class field trip, Dad's Club, Room parent, class volunteer, field day, etc.) arises during the year that you are interested in. Please click on the link below to complete it.

ELA - We are finishing our poetry unit in both reading and writing this week. We will round it out with tricky words (context clues and dictionary skills) , theme, and mood! As you child to share what they’ve learned and written about so far!

Social Studies - This is our last week for economics. We will be studying capital, human, and natural resources! Money, money, money! My apologies if your child’s entrepreneurial spirit is ignited, and you have a new business to subsidize!

Math - We are ending our area and perimeter unit with a big bang: area and perimeter practice problems, area vs. perimeter word problems, and missing side word problems. We are starting Money Mondays and Time Tuesdays. First, we’ll review how to count collections of coins, and as the Mondays go by, we’ll move from that skill to counting collections of bills and coins and then on to learning about financial literacy. We have already reviewed how to tell time, so our Time Tuesdays will eventually progress to learning about elapsed time. Math is a game of inches (just kidding, that’s football), and we are getting oh so close to our final units, which are Fractions, Elapsed Time, Measurement, and Financial Literacy. If the area and perimeter unit naturally wraps up before the end of the week, we will not waste one moment and move right along to the big show: FRACTIONS. It’s happening, folks! Your children are becoming mathematicians and I am here for it!!

Science - In Science we will zoom into our last section of our Earth and Space Unit → Rapid Land Changes!!  This is a fan favorite for sure.  We will start by exploring volcanic eruptions, how they cause rapid land changes and the result afterwards.

Each week Ms. Martin sends out her Town Center Principal Newsletter. Please make sure to check out all the important campus-wide announcements in the Principal Newsletter.

ELA - During ELAR this week we will explore poetry. Last week we learned the vocabulary stanza, line, verse, point of view, rhyme and free verse.  This week students will compose poetry during writing where they focus on writing specific numbers of lines and stanzas.  In reading we will learn more about figurative language. We will be identifying and discovering the meaning behind similes and metaphors. They will also be exploring hyperbole and the use of onomatopoeia! You can check their progress on their learning journals in keynote!

Social Studies - This is an echo of Mrs. Shelby’s science refrain! We did begin studying personal finance this past week but have barely scratched the surface. We will explore the economic vocabulary barter, trade, goods and services and monetary flow.

Math - We’re wrapping up finding area, and now it’s time to move on to finding the perimeter, which is a new skill for 3rd graders. The saying that will be on repeat in B110 is per-i-me-ter: add. Up. All. The. Sides. We will discuss the difference between finding the area and finding the perimeter, how perimeter measures the distance around a shape, and how we can find the perimeter of any shape, not just squares and rectangles. At the end of the week, we’ll get into finding the length of the missing side when we are given the perimeter. For instance, if the perimeter of the triangle is 16 units and 2 of the sides each measure 6 units, what is the length of the 3rd side? (The answer is 4 units.) You add up what you know (6+6=12), then subtract from the perimeter (16-12=4). We’re on our last little bit of learning before we get to what we came for, which is fractions…LET’S GOOOOOO!

Science - Last week with the craziness of the Valentine’s Party and creating our Winn Dixie movie posters, we didn’t get to Science.  So this week we will compare and explore day-to-day weather changes in different locations.  We will look at not only air temperature, but also precipitation, wind speed and wind direction and the instruments used to measure them.

ELA -

In reading and writing we will begin our poetry unit! We will study poetic elements including terms like stanza, line, line break, rhyme, and rhyme scheme. We will also use poetry to deepen our understanding of broader literary elements like theme and figurative language, specifically similes, metaphors, and hyperbole. They will have the opportunity to read rich examples and create their own! Our librarian also introduced a national poetry writing competition to your third grader! Last year we had THREE Town Center 3rd graders whose poems were selected for this national anthology!!

Social Studies - We continue to learn about personal finance in social studies and how it applies to our roles as citizens. We will finish the game of LIFE and review our financial literacy terms.

Math - In math this week, we will continue our exploration of the life skill of learning how to calculate area, and I must say, your kiddos are doing great! They are grasping that finding the area of a shape (no matter the shape) means we cover the shape with square units. We dipped our toes into the pool of composite area by covering a composite shape (2 or more shapes put together) and counting the squares. They are now ready to find the area of a composite shape by using the formula for area for squares and rectangles. Please see the example below:

Step 1: Partition (split) into 2 shapes (black line)

Step 2: Label the shapes A and B.

Step 3: Find the area of A: 9 x 2 = 18 sq ft

Step 4: Find the area of B: 4 x 4 = 16 sq ft

Step 5: Add the areas: 18 + 16 = 34 sq ft - this is the answer.

In addition to practicing area calculations, the homework this week will focus on subtracting 3 digit numbers with regrouping. Regrouping is the #newmath word for “borrowing”. A lot of children have mastered regrouping across 3 digits, which is new for 3rd graders, but some aren’t quite sure how the top number changes when it needs to be regrouped. Please refer to the tutorial that is going home with the homework in case you aren’t quite sure how to help or what to say. #igotyou

Finally, I encourage you to work on this with your kiddo so you’ll know exactly where they are in their regrouping journey. And please make sure no calculators are being used!

Science - In Science we will compare and explore day-to-day weather changes in different locations.  We will look at not only air temperature, but also precipitation, wind speed and wind direction and the instruments used to measure them.
