Background Checks

We ask that all families complete a volunteer background check at the start of the year. They do not carry over from year to year. Since the background checks take time to process, we ask that everyone complete one in case any type of volunteering opportunity (class field trip, Dad's Club, Room parent, class volunteer, field day, etc.) arises during the year that you are interested in. Tennis Shoes for PE & Extended Specials Day (CTT)

Please help ensure your child wears appropriate shoes on PE days and Move & Groove (Fridays). Additionally, every other Thursday 3rd grade has extended specials during CTT. The dates are outlined for the remainder of the year below. Thank you for your help in making sure your child is safely dressed for the gym!

ELA -

In our week before the break, we will use our writing skills to create holiday cards and a fun “If I were stuck in a snow globe” writing.

In reading this week we will continue reading Because of Winn Dixie. We will work on character arc, plot and point of view as we will continue to do throughout the book. We will also read a few holiday books and create a “secret craft” to do with them.

Social Studies - This week will round up our unit on research, geography, and how humans interact with the environment.

Math - We are going to work on our input/output tables this week, which will make us ready to go for our first-week-back-in- January math project of Function Machines! There are 3 types of input/output tables that 3rd graders are expected to know how to do; please see the picture and explanations below.

On #1, the learners are given the input and the rule and are expected to find the output. On #2, the learners are given the output and the rule and are expected to do the inverse (opposite) operation to find the input. On #3, the learners are given the input and the output and are expected to guess and check to find the rule - this one is the most difficult of the 3. Our Function Machines will help us practice these tables - shout out to Venus Bhasin, Veronica Costilla, and Kevin Krone. These parents have come to help build the machines and I am so thankful!

I have had some people ask about dot plots. Please see the pic and explanations below:

In this dot plot (also called number plots), the Xs mean people, and the 1, 2, 3, and 4 below the line mean the number of siblings students have.

Can you believe our first semester is done? I can’t even! Please enjoy your holiday break and we’ll see you in 2025 for more amazing 3rd grade math!

Science - We will continue our weathering exploration this week.  We are in the middle of a Salt Lick Experiment to demonstrate mechanical weathering and will continue to monitor it and record our observations.
