A Note from Nurse Crenshaw

St. Ann’s Catholic Parish is once again sponsoring Thanksgiving Basket deliveries (or a pickup option at St Ann’s Church if you prefer). This program provides families in need with a complete Thanksgiving dinner for the entire family. The baskets will be delivered to your home the weekend before Thanksgiving, so it is critically important that an adult representing the family be at the home between the hours of Noon and 4PM on Sunday, November 24th, 2024. The deadline to sign up for a basket is October 22nd, 2024.

Please fill out this form with all information requested. Please contact Nurse Crenshaw if you have any questions. kcrenshaw@coppellisd.com

Mobile Food Pantry

Coppell Cares

Coppell Cares offers the Weekend Backpack Program for families who have financial need. Each Friday, learners receive a bag of snacks for the weekend. The goal of the program is to help eliminate food insecurity for children. They provide nutritious breakfast, lunch and snack items to eligible CISD children (and siblings). This weekly food program helps feed children over the weekend during the school year when they are not receiving meals at school.

If you would like your child(ren) to participate in this program, please complete the online application below.  If you would prefer a paper copy to be sent home with your child, please email TCE's counselor, Kelly Matlock, at kmatlock@coppellisd.com.  Families may sign up for this program at any time during the school year.  Deliveries will begin Friday, September 6th.  Deliveries will be suspended for Thanksgiving Week, Winter Break, and Spring Break.

Attendance

Background Checks

We ask that all families complete a volunteer background check at the start of the year. They do not carry over from year to year. Since the background checks take time to process, we ask that everyone complete one in case any type of volunteering opportunity (class field trip, Dad's Club, Room parent, class volunteer, field day, etc.) arises during the year that you are interested in. Please click on the link below to complete it.

ELA -

Writing is a process and they have been working hard on all the stages!  In writing this week we will work on revising and editing our narrative drafts so that we can move into publishing them!

In Grammar we will work on identifying and constructing simple sentences.

This week we are reviewing our friction study. Each student will have the opportunity to practice all of the tools in their kit. We will be applying so many strategies while we read. Here a few we will revisit this week:

-Readers stop to give themselves comprehension checks by asking who, what, where questions.

-Readers think about what the text is asking them to do. They visualize to make movies in their mind, or they make a list to gather information.

- Readers make high level predictions based on background knowledge and evidence from the text.

-Readers us a variety of strategies to figure out the meaning of words they don’t know: Gist, Antonyms, Synonyms, Explanation

-Readers retell important events that happen in the story to solidify understanding

-Readers make deep connections to the text with themselves, other texts and the world

-Readers respond to text using complete thoughts and sentences that involve restating the prompt.

Social Studies - In social studies this week, we will continue our unit on citizenship. We learn lots in this unit about our civil duties as citizens. We will also begin to learn about different government structures.

Math - We have gotten thiiiiiiiis close to finishing our place value unit and are starting to look forward to taking our place value post test (right now I’m thinking it will be on Tuesday, October 8). We’ve been checking our knowledge and showing what we know on our Schoology checks. These are short (3-4 questions) checks about 1 concept. For example, all 4 questions are about subtraction, or comparing, or expanded form. This data helps me know who needs extra help with a certain concept. In addition to reteaching and helping your learner practice our 3rd grade place value skills, we will learn about estimating sums and differences this week. The rule for this is if the word problem wants to know ABOUT how many, we round first, then add (or subtract). The first nine weeks is coming to a close - wild, right? Soon we’ll be moving on to multiplication and division; what a time to be alive!

Science - This week we will begin our new unit Force, Motion and Energy…oh my!  We will kick it off by demonstrating and describing how forces (magnetism, gravity, pushes and pulls) act on an object.
