Math

We are dividing, but we’re not divided! We are all in unity with learning about representing division. It’s all about equal shares, so your kiddo is going to learn lots of lessons about how to divvy things up evenly, and we know those younger siblings out there say thank you! We say you’re welcome. Repeated subtraction (subtracting over and over until we get to zero), using a number line to show division (starting on the dividend - big number - jumping backwards by the divisor until we get to 0 and then counting those jumps), and putting items into equal groups are all ways we can represent this last but not least operation in math. We’re all around that campfire singing Kumbaya and making sure everyone has an equal share, and it’s going to be EPIC!

Science

And for our final act in “Name That Force”…Friction! And it’s a force to be reckoned with!  We will be exploring different surfaces and how they affect the speed and motion of an object.

Reading/Writing

We are deep into our informational/expository unit. During reading this week we will use our knowledge of NonFiction Text Features to make an “All About Me.”

During writing we are continuing our expository essay writing. Last week we focused more on diagraming texts that were written by other authors.  This week we will use expert writing as a model to draft our own work.

In grammar, we will build on our work with complete sentences to focus on punctuation!

Social Studies

We will continue learning about our United States government, historical documents, and our founding fathers. We will take a closer look at the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights and U. S. Constitution. We will also explore the three branches of government and learn more about our founding fathers.

Math

Next up? It’s the crown jewel in the multiplication crown: the STAAAADARRRRDDD ALGORITHM! Oh yeah! Guys, we made it! We trudged through that “new math” (I’m looking at you, area models) and have arrived at the strategy we all know and love and grew up with and still use; and by that I mean go ahead and carry that 1, baby! We will practice the standard algorithm all week and solidify our dope rhyme: Bottom, Top, Bottom, Side: That is how we multiply! Math TIME (teaching in small groups versus whole group) has been going well, and we are looking forward to another fabulous math week in 3rd grade!

Science

In Science next week we will continue exploring forces.  We will look at magnetism and gravity and how our lives are affected by them.  We will pose the question “What would life on Earth be like without gravity?”

Reading/Writing

During writing this week we will be collecting information on an animal species and beginning to frame their draft.  Our Reading will blend into this activity. Learners will practice identifying the main idea and supporting details of nonfiction texts. We will work with sentence structure and add in correct punctuation marks for simple and compound sentences.

Social Studies

We are still working in our citizenship and government unit.  Our focus will be on the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights and the Constitution.

Math

This week, we will begin learning 2 digit by 1 digit multiplication, and buckle up, Buttercup, because before we learn the traditional way of putting the 2 digit number on top and the 1 digit number on the bottom and then multiplying, we are going to learn some new and fancy ways to multiply: by partial products and by using an area model. Both of these new strategies accomplish the exact same thing as using the traditional algorithm, but they allow the kiddos to organize their numbers in a way  that might be easier for them than by lining up the place values. By the end of next week, we will be multiplying 2 digit by 1 digit numbers in the old fashioned way (the algorithm). Carry that number, bab! And you know I love a good rhyme, so here it is: Bottom, top, bottom, side, THAT IS HOW WE MULTIPLY!

Science

In Science, we will begin exploring force and motion.  Pushes and pulls are all around us!  We will focus on how objects can move and change position when pushed or pulled.  Lots of demonstrations going down this week :)

Reading/Writing

We have dipped our toes into our nonfiction unit for both reading and writing.  This week we will explore nonfiction text features and study how authors organize non fiction writing. We will also focus on the main idea of articles and reinforce them with supporting details.  Our reading and writing units are so intermingled that students shouldn’t even know where “reading” ends and “writing” begins. Our grammar focus is on complete simple sentences.

We are also working on their cursive handwriting.  By now, your student has mastered the letters c, a, d, g, and h.  They are working on stringing them together.  We will work this week on adding t to the repertoire.

Social Studies

This week we will focus on characteristics of a good citizen. We will introduce the notion of a jury. In addition we will revisit the technology citizenship requirements.

Color Run

3rd Grade Goal Chart

Mark your calendars for the Town Center Color Run!

October 14th 5:30-7:00 p.m. Town Center Elementary

This is our PTO's big fundraiser for the year, so please plan to join us. The fundraiser has begun and will run through Oct. 14th, ending with the Color Run!

Here's how the fundraiser will work:

  • All TCE students will be given a free Color Run shirt and be able to be a part of the run at no cost. Parents that want to participate in the run can register at www.tcepto.com for $20.00.
  • Each class has created a donation goal chart with donation amounts and the rewards the class gets when they reach those amounts. Be on the lookout for emails from your child's teacher about hitting class goals and earning rewards.
  • Donations can be made online at www.tcepto.com, or students can bring in cash or a check (payable to TCE PTO). Make sure the donations are marked with your student's name and teacher so that it's added to their class total. Send our donation link to family and friends that would be interested in donating.
Donations from this fundraiser will go to fund Field Day, buses for field trips, Teacher Appreciation Week, and classroom grants that provide materials and resources for our students to use.

Math

So we’ve sung Boys II Men and Tina Turner in the last 2 math blog posts, and this week we have…no one! Just me ladies and gentlemen, taking my solo turn at giving you the lowdown you always wanted (and some you didn’t, let’s be honest) about third grade math. We are still representing multiplication with arrays, number lines, and repeated addition, and then next Friday, October 14, we are going to talk about all the ways the word “group” can be in disguise. On that day, if you’d like, please have your child bring a simple disguise (like a wig, a pair of sunglasses, and/or a hat) so we can have a fun time being in disguise while learning about multiplication! We’re gonna ROCK, 3rd grade families!

Science

In Science we have discussed that energy is the ability to do work and it is EVERYWHERE! Next week we will continue our exploration of types of energy: sound, light, mechanical and thermal (heat).  They will finish out the week working in groups to complete a Forms of Energy Showcase.

Reading/Writing

After assessments on Friday, we realized we needed more time with narratives so this next paragraph might look familiar!!

Next week we will start our new units: “Reading to Learn” and “Writing to Teach”.  We will be doing all things nonfiction and informational. As this year is a big transition in reading and writing for students it will be something we would love your support on!  Please be in conversation with your kids about their favorite topics i.e. volcanoes, tornadoes, dinosaurs, crickets, gardening, classic rock music… Whatever their heart desires! We will be using information about their passions to write and teach in the style of informational essays.

Social Studies

We are looking at the cultural celebrations and traditions that are important in Hispanic cultures and communities to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.
