Math
We’re standing on the edge of a precipice: will they or will they not remember how to subtract with regrouping? That is the question. My bet is that these amazing 3rd grade mathematicians WILL remember! This is a 2nd grade skill, but we will up our subtraction game by adding more place values. P.S. “Subtraction with regrouping” means borrowing - remember that old gem from your elementary days?
We will also learn to ruh-ruh ROUND this week. First comes learning what it means to round (just trying to get to our closest friendly number - number with a 0 on the end - nothing to see here folks, and then we learn the rounding rhyme and steps: Underline the place value and draw an arrow to the place value on the right. Ask: “Are you 5 or more?” If yes, raise the score (the underlined digit is increased by 1). If not, ask: “Are you 4 or less?” Then let it rest. (The underlined digit stays the same.) Whew. Big, big week in 3rd grade math, and we are here for it!
Science
In Science this week we will start exploring the States of Matter (solid, liquid, and gas). We will look at how the molecules are positioned and how they move. This will help explain some of the properties of solids, liquids, and gasses.
Reading/Writing
In Reading this week we will explore more challenging stories by visualizing the text and making predictions based on text evidence.
In Writing this week we will discover ways that writers improve their writing. We will revise and edit personal narratives we have already crafted.
