Thanksgiving Baskets

Every year St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Coppell provides Thanksgiving baskets with supplies to cook a turkey a dinner to those in need. Math 

Multiplication word problems are comin’ in hot! We will learn the basic building blocks of word problems that involve multiplication, including but not limited to all the secret undercover words that mean “groups” without being the actual word groups; for instance, bags, boxes, buckets, backpacks…

We will review addition and subtraction with regrouping, we will talk about how number lines relate to multiplication, and we will take a few Schoology checks. Easy peasy lemon squeezy! Happy mathing!

Science 

Let's learn about Forces!  We will begin with pushes and pulls.  We will discuss how an object’s position can change when a force (push or pull) is applied.

Reading/Writing 

In reading we will continue our nonfiction unit by exploring the main idea and supporting details. We will finish up our narrative writing unit by going through the whole writing process!

Social Studies 

In social studies we will be discussing 3 levels of government: local, state, and national. We will overview what the levels of government are and the responsibilities of each.

This year, our TCE Fundraiser will be a Fun Run on October 21st! As our Fun Run gets closer, make sure to register online at mybooster.com. It's free to register your child(ren) and for them to participate in the fun run. We've set a school goal to earn $15,000 for our school to be used for classroom grants that fund instructional materials and experiences. We shared our school-wide incentive on announcements this morning- a dunking booth for the administrators! The top three individual earners will get to dunk us, along with the teacher of the class that has the highest average earned per child (due to our varying class sizes). Book Character Pumpkin Extravaganza

 

It's that time of year!  Fall leaves, cool air, and PUMPKINS!  The TCE Library presents Book Character Pumpkin Extravaganza!  Your child or family can decorate a pumpkin as a book character.  Please NO CARVED pumpkins.  You may decorate, paint, glue, etc a real or fake pumpkin to look like a character from a book.  Please include a paper or index card with your child's name, class, character's name and book title.  Pumpkins may be dropped off in the library anytime through October 22nd and will be sent home October 29th.  If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Mancuso at kmancuso@coppellisd.com

Math 

Equal groups, arrays, repeated addition, oh my! The multiplication and division unit is upon us and will last until December. First, we will take the pretest (this determines each student's preexisting knowledge). Then, after an introduction to multiplication, we will learn different ways to represent multiplication: equal groups, arrays, repeated addition, and skip counting. We have already learned the 3s and 4s songs, and now it's time to learn the 6s song. (Is there anything cuter than 3rd graders singing in a math choir about multiplication? I think not.) Finally, all children will be moved to multiplication and division on Reflex. It's a big week, Texans!

Science 

We will continue exploring different forms of energy; light, sound, heat and mechanical. We will discuss how energy can be transferred to other forms, but never created or destroyed.

Reading/Writing 

In language arts, we are going to take some time to practice our reading skills and reading stamina. We will introduce our next unit of non-fiction reading and begin to think about how we read non-fiction and identify differences from fiction reading. In writing we will wrap up our unit on narrative writing and begin to introduce expository and informational writing.

Social Studies 

In social studies, we will continue to overview citizenship and government. We will review what makes a good citizen and different citizenship responsibilities.

Math 

That’s all folks! We will be wrapping up our place value/numeracy unit by working on our place value choice board. We will have a few lessons about missing number problems (Example: I have 500 candies and give away some. Now I have 200. How many did I give away? Solve: 500-200=300) and missing addend problems (Example: I have 200 candies and get some more. Now I have 500. How many did I get? Solve: 500-200=300), and then the choice board will be on and poppin’!

Science 

In Science we will begin our new unit on Force, Motion and Energy.  Woohoo!  We will start with exploring different forms of energy; light, sound, heat and mechanical.

Reading/Writing 

We will be wrapping up our fiction unit in reading. We will be practicing our reading responses and comprehension skills that we have learned across the unit. In writing, we will continue with narrative stories.

Social Studies 

We will continue discussing the characteristics of a good citizen.  We will go over respect and responsibility in daily life.  They will be creating a Bingo board with examples of how they can be responsible at home, in school, and in their community.

Math 

We’re regrouping! Yeah, we are! For us grown folk, that “new math” talk means borrowing and carrying the one. I have no problem using those terms; they’re interchangeable with regrouping, and honestly, these terms from our youth connect with the kiddos of today as well. 

As you know, we love a rhyme down in 110B, so here are our rhymes for addition and subtraction:

More on the top? No need to stop. (No need to regroup.)

More on the floor? Go next door, get 10 more. (You need to regroup - borrow.)

Numbers the same? Zero’s the game! (Example: 5-5=0)

When we are trick or treating, and someone isn’t home, we keep going on to the next house until we get to a house where someone is home. The same principle applies when subtracting across 0s: when a place value has a 0, we keep going to the next place value until we get to a digit greater than 0.

We will also discuss some addition and subtraction word problems this week.

Science 

We will continue with changing states of matter by exploring condensation and evaporation.  We will also explore mixtures and how identifying properties of matter can help with separating them.

Reading/Writing 

In reading, we will continue monitoring and adjusting comprehension when tackling more challenging fiction texts. We will show our reading GRIT by not giving up easily and instead use context clues to solve hard words, make sense of figurative language and talk back to the text using thick and thin questions. We will deepen our understanding of our reading by making text-to-text, text-to self, and text to world connections. In writing, we will continue planning and using graphic organizers to get our thoughts in a logical order and finish writing our first drafts (including an introduction and closing).  We will begin editing and revising to make our writing the best it can be.

Social Studies 

We will begin our new unit of Government and Citizenship.  We will start with looking at characteristics of a good citizen.

Conferences

Be on the lookout for an email home soon to sign up for conferences.  We will be doing these virtually via Zoom this year and will begin these the week of Oct. 4th.  

Fidgets

While fidgets can be very helpful for some learners, we are finding that they are becoming a distraction for most kids.  We ask that, unless you have had a direct conversation with your child’s teacher regarding the use of fidgets, please help remind your child to leave these at home.

Pokemon Cards

Many of the kids are bringing their Pokemon cards from home to share and trade during recess.  We are completely fine with that!  We just ask that you help reiterate that this is an activity for recess only.  We will have a class discussion about it as well.  Thank you for your help with this.

Math 

Okay, if you were excited to learn rounding, then buckle up, Buttercup, because we have addition and subtraction using the algorithm coming up next week! Woohoo! We will finish up rounding and take a Schoology check, we will estimate sums and differences, and then...ADDING AND SUBTRACTING! This is a 2nd grade skill, so we add on for 3rd is by adding and subtracting numbers with higher place values. We will practice regrouping - “carrying the one” and “borrowing” - and we will practice subtracting across zeros. It’s gonna be wild!

Science 

Next week in Science, we will be exploring the States of Matter (solid, liquid and gas).  We will look at the properties of each and have a scavenger hunt around the school identifying them.  We will also begin to explore changing states of matter by examining what causes freezing and melting to occur.

Reading/Writing 

Next week in reading, we will continue retelling nonfiction stories, using higher level predictions and will learn all about using strategies to figure out hard words. We will continue to challenge our thinking with comprehension checks. In writing, we will continue writing narrative stories while focusing on the parts of narrative stories.

Social Studies 

In Social Studies, we will complete our Communities and Culture Unit by sharing their culture projects that they have been working so hard on!

Math 

NWEA Map testing will take place Monday; for anyone who isn’t finished, it will carry on over to Tuesday. As for our math content, we are rollin’ rollin’ rollin’ into rounding! First, we will look at the number line to assist us with rounding. The point of rounding is to help us get to the closest friendly number, which is a number that ends in 0. Sometimes kiddos just don’t understand what they’re doing when they round. We’re finding those close friendly numbers! We will also teach the steps to rounding: 1. Identify your place. Underline it. 2. Go next door. 3. Ask that neighbor “Are you 5 or more or 4 or less?” If the neighbor digit is 5 or more, we “raise the score” of the underlined number. If the neighbor digit is 4 or less, we “let it [the underlined number] rest”. We love a good rhyme in 110B!

Science 

Next week in Science, we will continue to explore properties of matter.  We will focus on length/distance and weight/mass.  We will also identify the states of matter (solid, liquid, gas). We will also doing our Science MAP on Friday 9/17.

Reading/Writing 

Next week in reading, we will be overviewing retelling as well as introducing higher level predictions and how to challenge our thinking with giving ourselves comprehension checks. In writing, we will dive into learning how to come up with ideas and begin writing narrative stories.

Social Studies 

Next week in Socials Studies, the kids will be working on a Culture Project.  This is where they will be able to showcase all the wonderful, special things that are unique to your family!  Please take a minute to help your child fill out the following form.  This will be helpful for them when working in class next week.  I am including the link here, but I have also made the form available in Schoology in their Social Studies course.  My Culture Doc

Water Bottles

Please make sure your child packs a water in his or her backpack! The office only has little cups for them to fill up if your child needs water during the day.

Breakfast

If your child would like to eat breakfast at school please make sure they are here as close to 7:20 as possible. They will eat in the cafeteria and then head down to class. We begin our lessons at 8:00 and don't want them to miss out on any learning.

 

Math 

Comparing and ordering numbers is next on our list, and our job as math judges will be important. We will accept the challenge and use our place value knowledge to determine the greatest and least numbers - but don’t worry. We won’t be hurting any numbers’ feelings; of course we’ll only determine a number is greater or less based on the amount it represents, not its outward appearance. Which number is greater? Which number is less? Put these numbers in order! Are these numbers in order? Yes! No! It’s a big job, but your 3rd grade mathematicians can handle it!

Science 

We will begin our unit on Properties of Matter.  We will begin with exploring density with a Sink or Float experiment.  We will also work on determining the length of objects using both customary and metric measurements. 

Reading/Writing 

Next week we will begin thinking about our reading. We will talk about how to give ourselves comprehension checks, and will introduce making predictions. On Thursday 9/9, we will be taking our 3rd grade reading MAP test!  

Social Studies 

We will continue our discussion about why people form communities.  We will look at the evolution of transportation, religious freedom, and recreation (places we go to for fun!). On Friday, we will have a lesson that recognizes 9/11 and the heroes of that day.
