Background Checks

We ask that all families complete a volunteer background check at the start of the year. They do not carry over from year to year. Since the background checks take time to process, we ask that everyone complete one in case any type of volunteering opportunity (class field trip, Dad's Club, Room parent, class volunteer, field day, etc.) arises during the year that you are interested in. Please click on the link below to complete it.

ELA -

During ELAR this week we will be working on our research skills. We will read nonfiction text while learning to synthesise information. This way we can restate information in our own words while adding our own background knowledge.

Math - Math STAAR is here! On Monday, we will have some last minute preparation with an all day theme of 3rd Grade Math Superstars (Think Hollywood Walk of Fame). We will review STAAR app tools, remind kids how to set up their scratch paper, and practice our multiplication songs. If your kiddo has some sunglasses, or a feather boa, or some other small costume piece for their multiplication song performance in the game “Math Idol”, they are welcome to bring it on Monday. It’s also okay to bring a cordless, charged microphone for their big moment on the classroom stage. We will end the day with some popsicles on the playground.

Your child is so ready for Tuesday! Please give them encouraging, positive messages to up their confidence. All I ask is that everyone try their personal best and “lock in”, as my 14 year old son says while watching the NBA. I am excited for our 3rd graders to crush this test on Tuesday. They are amazing children, and I am proud of them!

Science - Next week in Science we will be covering animal adaptations, structures and function of plants and animals and the flow of energy in food chains.

Social Studies - Our last social studies unit will tie into ELAR as we research historical figures. Students will look at how Our past is related to the present while noticing that Heroes, scientists, entrepreneurs, and inventors have certain characteristics.

Math - Okay 3rd Grade Families, you know what time it is: REVIEW TIME! We will have our Heat Map study on Tuesday so that we can dive into how your child actually did on the practice math STAAR (which was actually the 2024 Released Math STAAR). This will help us determine which TEKS each child understands and which ones need some work. There are some concepts I already know need some practice as a grade level (counting collections of bills and coins, geometry, and strip diagrams come to mind), but I want each child to feel like they’re getting the individual review they need to see success on test day next week. We will spend the rest of this week going over all things STAAR: question types, released STAAR questions, and STAAR app tools and accommodations. We are going to be so ready by April 29 and you are going to be amazed by your kiddo. I already am! #rockSTAARlikeaBOSS

Science - In Science we will explore what an ecosystem is and how living and nonliving things interact with each other. We will then explore some specific ecosystems more closely; Arctic, Grassland, Forest, Desert, Rainforest, Ocean

Social Studies - Our last social studies unit will tie into ELAR as we research historical figures. Students will look at how Our past is related to the present while noticing that Heroes, scientists, entrepreneurs, and inventors have certain characteristics.

Reading STAAR on Tuesday. We will finish out the week by reflecting on our accomplishments this year and will be doing some fun reading and writing activities!

Math - This week in math we’ll be finishing up our 3rd grade math TEKS!! We will finish elapsed time, learn about measurement, and practice counting money (there isn’t a  3rd grade TEK for money, and it’s been a loooong while since there was a STAAR question where kiddos had to count money, but it’s good to practice). As for measurement, we’ll practice using a ruler and also learn about liquid measurement - both customary and metric units. It is going to be a fun time! Make sure to ask your child about the Kingdom of Gallon by the end of the week, and please check out this Saturday Night Live skit with Nate Bargatze. It’s hilarious and perfect for this unit in 3rd grade math! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYqfVE-fykk&t=20s
