100th Day of School

Valentine's Party

Our class Valentine's Party will be on Thursday, 2/13 @ 2:00.  Parents are welcome to attend!  You will just need an ID to check in at the front office.  We will be making their Valentine's bags here at school so there is no need to send in a box or bag.

A note went home on Friday, 1/31 with your child that has specific class numbers and names for their homeroom.  Please refer to that if you plan on making/buying Valentine's to pass out.

If you need another copy of the letter please reach out to your child's homeroom teacher.

Valentine's Dance

Back by popular demand, TCE PTO is hosting our annual Valentine's Dance Party! Mark your calendars for Thursday, February 13th from 6PM-8PM in the TCE gym.

Tickets will include admission to the amazing dance party, snacks and a special surprise! Tickets are available on the PTO website - just Click here to log into your account and purchase. You won't want to miss this amazing event! Please reach out with any questions.

Thanks so much,

Background Checks

We ask that all families complete a volunteer background check at the start of the year. They do not carry over from year to year. Since the background checks take time to process, we ask that everyone complete one in case any type of volunteering opportunity (class field trip, Dad's Club, Room parent, class volunteer, field day, etc.) arises during the year that you are interested in. Please click on the link below to complete it.

In Writing we will continue to explore the components of an Extended Constructed Response.  Last week we identified the importance of stating your thesis and citing evidence from the text.  This week we will focus on EXPLAINING the evidence cited and the importance of a conclusion.  We will also practice our writing skills through typing so they can become more comfortable with composing writing pieces on their iPad.

Studying theme with your kids has really blown my mind! They have picked up on this so quickly!! Ask them to share their “Piper” short and theme with you.  Also please take time to go over the main idea homework feedback I provided this week. This is a tricky skill we are still working on!

In reading we are still spiraling several concepts as we finish Winn Dixie. They include plot, theme, cause and effect, main idea, and figurative language.

Social Studies - In social studies this week we will be in the beginning stages of our personal finance/economics unit. We will play the game of “Life” and learn about planning, spending, and saving.

Math - We have wrapped up learning new info about geometry and will now move into practicing our skills and applying our vocabulary (see updated geometry list below). Our area and perimeter unit will kick off on Monday with area being up first. Even though I don’t know the questions on the upcoming STAAR in April (they didn’t ask my thoughts, #rude), I can all but guarantee there will be at least 1 perimeter and 1 area question, and usually there are more. Plus, it’s a life skill they’ll need as an adult, which always makes this math teacher pumped up! In 2nd grade, they learned how to find the area by counting the square tiles that cover a square or rectangle; this year, we’ll review that skill and take it further by using the formula for finding the area of squares and rectangles, which is l x w = area. We are marching towards reading the word problem to determine if they’re finding area or perimeter, but that’s a classic marathon-not-sprint situation.

SLO Check #4 showed me that we need a refresher of 1) multiplication and division fact fluency 2) 2 by 1 digit multiplication, and 3) multiplication and division word problems, so the upcoming homework will focus on these 3 skills. I encourage you to make your child spend time on Reflex or flashcards at home in addition to the paper homework. They need it!

Our Current Geometry Vocab: attribute, polygon, angle, vertex, vertices, side, right angle, 90° angle, triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon, nonagon, decagon, hendecagon, dodecagon, trapezoid, parallelogram, rectangle, square, rhombus, congruent, parallel lines, rectangular prism, triangular prism, cube, cone, sphere, cylinder

Science - In Science we will use our knowledge of natural resources and how they are used to help in identifying the importance of conserving them.

Homework Club

Good news! Homework Club begins this week! On Monday, your 3rd grader will have homework to practice previously learned skills. Please have your kiddo bring back his or her completed work by Friday to earn a checkmark. A certain amount of Friday checkmarks on the Homework Club Posters will equal a future reward…stay tuned!

We will continue to build our writing stamina through daily writing.  It can be tough for 3rd graders to sit and continuously write…and write a well developed paragraph/story.  We will also work more on identifying what an Extended Constructed Response question looks like and how to respond to it.  We will be exploring different writing samples and comparing them with the grading rubric for what is expected.

During reading this week we will continue exploring fictional elements while sharing in our read aloud - Because of Winn Dixie. We will be working towards independence on identifying cause and effect that characters have on the plot as well as elements of plot and theme. We will also use the wonderful words of Kate DiCamillo to explore figurative vs literal language.

Social Studies - In social studies this week we will be in the beginning stages of our personal finance/economics unit. We will play the game of “Life” and learn about planning, spending, and saving.

Math - Please ask your child about geometry; you’ll be so impressed! In addition to the vocabulary list below, ask them which quadrilateral is different from all the others and therefore is all alone on the island. We’ll continue to talk about quadrilateral crossovers (a square is a quadrilateral, but it’s also a parallelogram, a rhombus, and a special kind of rectangle), and we’ll also get into identifying and classifying 3D shapes. 3D shapes are fat, not flat; that third dimension of height adds some chunkiness, ya know? Our Current Geometry Vocab: attribute, polygon, angle, vertex, vertices, side, right angle, 90° angle, triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon, nonagon, decagon, hendecagon, dodecagon, congruent, parallel lines, trapezoid, parallelogram, rhombus, rectangle, square

Science -In Science we will continue to explore Natural Resources.  We will look at how they are used in Transportation and making products.

ELA -

In writing this week we will work on continuing to build our stamina through a free write.  We will also explore what an Extended Constructed Response will look like on the upcoming STAAR.  As a class, we will walk through how to identify one, what steps to take before beginning to write, and construct a response together.

Math - This week is all about quadrilaterals! These polygons have 4 sides, angles, and 4 vertices. Quadrilaterals are interesting (#thingsmathteacherssay) because they can be further classified depending on their specific attributes. No need to feel your high school geometry trauma all over again; this unit is all about new vocabulary, and your 3rd grader is crushing it. By the end of this week, your kiddo will be able to tell you how a square is not just a square - it’s also a special kind of rectangle, a parallelogram, a rhombus, and a quadrilateral. Usually, STAAR 2D geometry questions involve understanding how quadrilaterals can overlap, and we’ve got it covered!
Our Current Geometry Vocab: attribute, polygon, angle, vertex, vertices, side, right angle, 90° angle, triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon, nonagon, decagon, hendecagon, dodecagon

Science -In Science this week we will explore Earth’s Resources and how humans utilize them.  We will start by looking specifically at how they are used in construction and agriculture.
