Six Flags Read To Succeed
Your learner should have come home with a letter and reading log for the Six Flags Read To Succeed program. If your child reads 6 hours (360 minutes) and logs their reading (with a parent signature), they will earn a free ticket to Six Flags. What are we learning?

Math

In math we will be concluding our Perimeter and Area unit. We will review finding the perimeter of polygons, finding the missing side of a polygon when given the perimeter, and finding the area of rectangles and composite figures. Our post test will be taken on Wednesday, the 30th of January.

Language Arts

In Language Arts, learners will continue to study character traits. We will begin to learn about making inferences in our reading. Learners are making a character traits folder about the characters in their Book Club book.

Science

In Science, learners will continue to explore our solar system and the position of the planet in relation to the sun.  Learners will create a model to represent the planets positions.

Social Studies

In Social Studies learners will begin their State Geography Project.  Each learner will be assigned a state.  As we explore different aspects of our physical environment they will then research those in their given state.  This will continue over a couple of weeks, as we will be breaking it down and not only looking at the physical environment but how it effects people in that area.

What are we learning?

Math

In math we will be continuing our Perimeter and Area unit. The learners know that perimeter is the space around a shape, and area is the space inside of a shape. This week we will review finding the perimeter of a polygon with missing sides, and focus on finding the area of composite figures. Learners know that composite figures are figures made up of 2 or more shapes. We will practice partitioning (decomposing or taking apart) these shapes to find the area. We will continue working through our Middle of the Year benchmark assessments.

Language Arts

In Language Arts this week we will continue our unit on Character analysis. We will also continue our Middle of Year assessments. We will be reviewing previous spelling patterns and new patterns will pick up once assessments are finished.  We will also be reviewing non fiction text features in book clubs.

Science

In Science learners will be able to understand that a solar system is a system of objects, such as planets and moons, in orbit around a star, such as our Sun.  They will also be exploring the planets in our solar system and their position in relation to the sun.

Social Studies

In Social Studies learners will continue to explore Maps and globes and how they contain map elements that assist in interpreting and creating maps.  They will also begin to explore the 4 elements of the physical environment that humans must adapt to Climate, Landforms, Natural Hazards, and Natural Resources.  They will explore these while researching various states/regions.

Don't Miss The Yearbook Deadline!
Only one week left! It's that time of year to purchase a yearbook for your child. Yearbook cost was NOT part of the Trailpass this year, so the only way to purchase is through  balfour.com  at a cost of $25.
You can also purchase an ad to appear in the yearbook to make this year extra special. Optional ads come in multiple sizes ranging from $15-$120.
We sold out for the last couple of years, so don't miss out! Yearbook sales end January 18, 2019.

What are we learning?

Math

In math we will be digging into our Perimeter and Area unit. The learners should have an understanding that perimeter is the space around a shape, and area is the space inside of a shape. We have covered how to find the perimeter of a shape (add up all of the sides), and will learn the formula to find the area of a rectangle this week (Area=Length X Width). We will also introduce composite figures and how to decompose them to find the area. We will also be working through our Middle of the Year benchmark assessments.

Language Arts

In Language Arts this week we will begin our unit on Character analysis. We are beginning  our Middle of Year assessments. We will be reviewing previous spelling patterns and new patterns will pick up once assessments are finished.  We will also be reviewing non fiction text features in book clubs.

Science

In Science we will continue our unit on Patterns in the sky.  Learners will be exploring the relationship between the Earth, sun and moon.  They will understand that the Earth revolves around the Sun and the Moon revolves around the Earth.

Social Studies

In Social Studies we are beginning out unit on Geography.  Learners will begin with exploring maps and globes and how they contain elements that assist in interpreting and creating maps.
