A Note from Nurse Crenshaw

St. Ann’s Catholic Parish is once again sponsoring Thanksgiving Basket deliveries (or a pickup option at St Ann’s Church if you prefer). This program provides families in need with a complete Thanksgiving dinner for the entire family. The baskets will be delivered to your home the weekend before Thanksgiving, so it is critically important that an adult representing the family be at the home between the hours of Noon and 4PM on Sunday, November 24th, 2024. The deadline to sign up for a basket is October 22nd, 2024.

Please fill out this form with all information requested. Please contact Nurse Crenshaw if you have any questions. kcrenshaw@coppellisd.com

Coppell Cares

Coppell Cares offers the Weekend Backpack Program for families who have financial need. Each Friday, learners receive a bag of snacks for the weekend. The goal of the program is to help eliminate food insecurity for children. They provide nutritious breakfast, lunch and snack items to eligible CISD children (and siblings). This weekly food program helps feed children over the weekend during the school year when they are not receiving meals at school.

If you would like your child(ren) to participate in this program, please complete the online application below.  If you would prefer a paper copy to be sent home with your child, please email TCE's counselor, Kelly Matlock, at kmatlock@coppellisd.com.  Families may sign up for this program at any time during the school year.  Deliveries will begin Friday, September 6th.  Deliveries will be suspended for Thanksgiving Week, Winter Break, and Spring Break.

Attendance

Background Checks

We ask that all families complete a volunteer background check at the start of the year. They do not carry over from year to year. Since the background checks take time to process, we ask that everyone complete one in case any type of volunteering opportunity (class field trip, Dad's Club, Room parent, class volunteer, field day, etc.) arises during the year that you are interested in. Please click on the link below to complete it.

October 28th Newsletter!

ELA - In Writing this week we are wrapping up our researching portion of Informational writing.  We will then use that information to complete our Main Idea stools so we can organize the information found into a main idea with supporting details.

In grammar we will look at 2 different ways an apostrophe can be used; possessive nouns (Mrs. Shelby’s book) and contractions (do not = don’t).

This week in reading we will continue our nonfiction study. We will review text features (index, bold print, captions, diagrams, glossary, headings, subheadings, illustrations, etc), how they enhance the text, and what the author’s purpose was for including them. We will also read to determine the author’s opinion and provide evidence to support our thinking.

Social Studies - We are exploring the founding fathers and historical documents that helped establish our country. This helps learners understand how the government functions in the present day.

Math - We have to learn about strip diagrams this week, and I know what you’re thinking: “what in the new math is a strip diagram?” You’re right, it is some new math stuff. But they’re useful, I promise! Strip diagrams represent what is going on in the word problem and serve as a visual representation of the happenings in a word problem. Here’s an example of a multiplication strip diagram and the word problem that goes with it:

Mrs. Naughton has 6 bags. Each bag has 3 cookies. How many cookies does she have?

The question mark can be on the top or the bottom, and it shows that we’re looking for the total. The squares being the same show that the groups are equal.

We will also learn that multiplication means that something is _______ times as many as something else. This type of word problem will sound like this: Mrs. Naughton has 6 stickers. Mrs. Shelby has 3 times as many. How many stickers does Mrs. Shelby have?

Lots of practical things to learn in math this week! Please continue to help your child learn his or her multiplication facts! It will change their math lives forever!

Science - This week we will continue our exploration into different forms of energy.  We will take a closer look at Light and Mechanical Energy.  We will explore how light travels (in waves) and the 2 different forms of mechanical energy (potential and kinetic).

ELA -

In writing, we will dig through non fiction books about animals to find key information.  We will then practice with how to use that information we find and organize it into Main Ideas with supporting details.

During reading this week we continue to interpret main idea from text. We will identify the topic then focus on what the non fiction passage is trying to teach us. We will also figure out which pieces of text evidence support the main idea and which are just extra information.

Social Studies - Our social studies unit two continues with levels of government. We will explore different levels of government and their roles.

Math - In math, we will continue learning how to represent multiplication. Last week, we were supposed to cover arrays, but we’ll catch up and learn about those this week, which are equal rows and columns. Try to point out arrays in real life with your child! (A trip to the donut shop maaaayyyy be necessary here, folks, as donuts are usually in the display case in equal rows and columns. Don’t blame me, it’s all in the name of math research!) We will also talk about representing multiplication on a number line and the thinking pattern (a way to think about math) for multiplication, which is EGPT, or Equal Groups Put Together. We will learn to identify the groups in a word problem and draw a mustache on top of the word that represents the group. Yes, you read that correctly. Multiplication is all about equal groups, but we learn that rarely do multiplication problems contain the actual word “group”. It’s often represented by some kind of container, like a plate or bin or bag. Those words mean groups, but we say they’re “in disguise”. We will continue to practice our skip counting songs and just all around have an awesome time learning about multiplication. Please continue to help your child by practicing those multiplication and division facts to 10!

Science - This week we move into discussing different forms of Energy; light, sound, mechanical and thermal (heat).  We will begin with sound and thermal and learn how they are produced, how it travels, and where we can find these in the world around us.
