Lion's Club

Each year the Lions Club of Coppell provides holiday baskets and toys for families in the Coppell ISD attendance area. Last year Lion's Club provided a special Christmas for over 127 families and hundreds of children who might otherwise have gone without. The food baskets and toys are delivered by members of the Lions Club of Coppell, and the identity of the recipients is kept confidential. All Lion's Club needs need to know is the address and the family demographics, sizes, and any special needs the family may have. If your family would like to apply for a holiday basket and toys, please email Town Center's counselor, Kelly Matlock, at kmatlock@coppellisd.com.

Math

Bar graphs, pictographs, and line plots, OH MY! We are following the yellow brick road and will all soon become Wizards of Data Analysis. Line plots are the new skill for 3rd grade - see the line plot example below because I don’t know about you guys, but in 1987 at Will Rogers Elementary in Altus, Oklahoma, we were NOT learning about line plots. Kiddos today are amazing!

This means that 2 students have 1 sibling, 3 students have 2 siblings, 4 students have 3 siblings, and 1 student has 4 siblings.

During the week of December 19, we will be making function machines so that we can practice input/output tables. If you’re able, please send in a dry, clean, empty half gallon cardboard container and an empty cereal box. We are feeling over the rainbow for math!

Science 

We will continue taking a closer look at weathering, erosion and deposition.  It’s a slooooooowwww process guys…literally!  We will also look at Natural Resources and how important it is to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle to preserve them! 

Reading/Writing 

We are wrapping up our study of nonfiction texts and will be moving into character studies in fiction stories. We will learn how characters’ actions influence a story and how they can change throughout a story. We will delve into the themes of stories and learn how to infer the theme of a story by putting pieces of the story together. We will be adding finishing touches to our nonfiction published pieces in writing and beginning to brainstorm and plan a persuasive writing piece.

Social Studies 

We will be kicking off our Geography study! We will be learning about different environments people live and work in and how we have adapted to and survive in those environments (climate, landforms, natural hazards and natural resources). We also will learn about how the Earth changes from both physical and human processes (building new homes, conservation and pollution).

Math

Okay guys, that’s a wrap on multiplication and division, and we are ready to rock and roll on that post test this week! ROCK AND ROLL!! We will be reviewing all week and shining up our knowledge about all things multiplication: 2 by 1 digit multiplication, representing multiplication and division, knowing if a number is even or odd, understanding that multiplication and division are related, and solving multiplication and division word problems. Fact fluency (knowing your multiplication and division facts 1-10 quickly and easily) will not be assessed here. We will continue to have the kiddos practice and learn on Reflex; fact fluency will be reported on our next report card, which goes home the first week in January.

Science 

Raise your hand if you are ready to “dig in” to a new unit?  I think I just saw all of your hands go up!  And they stay there and they stay there!  Next week we will begin our unit on Earth’s Surface.  We will kick it off by taking a closer look at soil; the layers, how it is formed and the importance of it.  2 new vocabulary words that will be introduced are weathering (the breaking down of rock), erosion (the movement of broken down rock and soil, and disposition (where the eroded pieces/soil end up). 

Reading/Writing 

We have been researching using multiple sources for our expository subtopics the last few weeks. We have been working hard to get our information organized into first drafts, using all of the grammar skills we have been working on - complete sentences, subject/verb agreement, correct punctuation. Next week, we will continue to edit and revise our drafts and complete our expository pieces! In reading, we are continuing to explore nonfiction text features!

Social Studies 

We will be wrapping up our study of US Government and Citizenship by continuing to add to our knowledge of historical documents.

Veteran's Day Ceremony - Friday, November 11th

We'd love for any veterans that are family or friends of our TCE family to join us Friday, November 11th at 8:15 a.m. Each grade level will participate, along with the TCE Choir or CHS Madrigals. A reception for guests will follow the ceremony. We look forward to celebrating our veterans. Guests will need to check in through the front office with a photo ID.

Math

It’s time we put all our multiplication and division knowledge to good use and start solving word problems, which of course is every 3rd grader’s favorite week in math - NOT. But. The lessons they learn this week are lifelong, useful math skills that they’ll need for the rest of their lives, and what’s more exciting than that? (Nothing. The answer is nothing.) We are getting closer to closing out this unit and are planning for the post test to be sometime the week of November 14. I say word problems, you say awesome!

Science 

It’s game time, baby!!  This is where it all comes together and the force is strong!  We will be creating a game that incorporates all that we have learned about force and motion.  The kids will be working in groups to design, build and test their own unique games.  Let the creativity begin!

Reading/Writing 

This has a really INFORMATIVE week!  We did a bunch of great work on our informational essays.  Your child has found relevant research and is learning to take notes in their own words. They are organizing these notes into appropriate categories. Next week they will write drafts in essay form!  WOW!  
We are also deep into analyzing and applying our knowledge of nonfiction text features through our All About Me activity.

Social Studies 

We will continue learning about our United States government, historical documents, and our founding fathers. We will take a closer look at the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights and U. S. Constitution. We will also explore the three branches of government and learn more about our founding fathers.
