Upcoming Dates
Parent Square
If parents haven’t signed up for the ParentSquare app, you should! It looks like this:
We will communicate this year a lot through ParentSquare, and having the app will make it a lot easier to receive notifications that we’ve posted a message to all families and/or sent a private message to you. When you have the app, it will work much like text messages and be an easy way for you to contact us and for us to contact you.

Math
Well, guys, the year begins and you know what that means! We learn ALL about the ingenious system called PLACE VALUE: where location location location means everything in determining the value of a number. We have reviewed representing numbers using expanded form, and next week, will discuss representing numbers 2 ways: by using and drawing base ten blocks and with expanded notation. Expanded notation is a new skill for 3rd graders, and here’s an example: 347=(3x100)+(4x10)+(7x1). While using the base ten blocks, we will make exchanges and practice decomposing numbers to make them in different ways. For instance: 47 can be made with 47 ones blocks OR 4 tens blocks and 7 ones blocks OR 3 tens blocks an 17 ones blocks.
All of this helps develop your child’s understanding of numbers, or numeracy, and it also gets us ready to practice subtraction and addition with regrouping (also called borrowing and carrying the one for all us of a certain age, ahem).
Science
In Science, we will begin our Properties of Matter Unit. We will start with physical properties and explore how we can measure, test and record them. Physical properties include size, color, flexibility, magnetism, mass, ability to sink or float…so many properties to explore!
