Third Grade Students of the Week
November 30th, 2018

Six Flags Read To Succeed

Your learner should have come home with a letter and reading log for the Six Flags Read To Succeed program. If your child reads 6 hours (360 minutes) and logs their reading (with a parent signature), they will earn a free ticket to Six Flags. This reading log is due back by February 19th to earn the Six Flags ticket.

What: Town Center first graders are collecting new, unwrapped

toys for children in need in Coppell.  We will be donating the toys to the

Coppell Lions Club. When you place your toy under the Christmas Tree,

please sign your name on an ornament and hang it on the tree!

Where: Place new, unwrapped toys under the Christmas tree by the

front office.

What are we learning?

Math

In math, we will start to make the connection between multiplication and division. We will discuss division being the inverse operation to multiplication and review division strategies including repeated subtraction, number lines, equal groups, and arrays. 

Language Arts

In Language Arts, learners will continue to learn strategies on how to find the main idea in a non fiction text. Learners will also be learning about cause and effect and apply strategies in their reading. 

In writing learners will continue to write using non fiction text features while working on their Social Studies research project. We will also be working on making our writing contain more details and more vivid verbs.

Science

In Science, learners will finish up their rapid changes research by creating a survival guide for the natural disaster of their choice. They have researched earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, and landslides. Now, they will pick the natural disaster of their choice and create a presentation about it and tips to survive it. Towards the end of the week learners will explore and record how soil is formed by weathering of rock and the decomposition of plant and animal remains. 

Social Studies

In Social Studies learners will continue working on their research for their historical or contemporary figure.

Your learner is coming home with an envelope containing their CogAT test results as well as a letter explaining the scores.

What are we learning?

Math

In math, we will continue with 2 digit by 1 digit multiplication. We have covered the Distributive Property/Partial Products and Area Model strategies and will continue to practice these. After our break we will hone in on the Standard Algorithm. There are strategy videos on our websites to better understand how we will be teaching these methods. If you would like your child to watch these at home to practice as "flipped learning" so that they will be familiar with the strategies as we practice them at school, that would be great! You can also find these strategy videos here. We will continue with our "fact fluency" timed practice. Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday will be retake days for past quizzes. New quizzes will be taken on Wednesdays and Fridays. This will not be a grade of any sort, just a way to practice and reinforce memorizing multiplication facts. Additionally, we will get some more practice with multi-step multiplication word problems. 

Language Arts

In LA we will be finishing up our review on Non Fiction Text Features.
Learners will read, infer, and draw conclusions to identify the details or facts that support the main idea of an article or book. 

In writing Learners will write about and discuss what they read and will get ideas for informational writing. We will integrate our SS projects with writing as we write about our Historical Figures.

Science

In Science, learners will investigate rapid changes in Earth’s surface such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and landslides and the effects they have after the fact.  After taking a deeper look into the rapid changes the learners will take this information to create a survival guide for a natural disaster. 

Social Studies

In Social Studies learners will continue to consider the following while they conduct their initial research on their historical figure:
How do historical and contemporary figures shape our community?
How have scientific and technological developments affect our community and us as individuals?
What are the characteristics of heroes as related to good citizenship?

Turkey Trot

Our TCE Turkey Trot will take place on Friday, November 16th during specials. Third grade has specials from 10:20-11:10 on Fridays.

What are we learning?

Math

In math, we will officially be moving on to 2 digit by 1 digit multiplication. In reading we will have a scavenger hunt to review our non fiction text features.  We will be setting up our BULB websites with the help of our camps Digital Learning Coach specialist. We will continue to work on book clubs and reviews biographies.  

In writing we will continue our gratitude journals. 

Science

In Science, learners will begin our new unit on Earth's surface.  They will take their pretest at the beginning of the week. We will then begin our unit by investigating rapid changes in Earth’s surface such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and landslides.

Social Studies

In Social Studies learners will begin to research historical and contemporary figures and be able to identify how Our past is related to the present, how heros, scientists, entrepreneurs, and inventors have certain characteristics and how Science and technological developments affect our community and citizens in a positive way.

Student of the Week 

3rd Grade Families,

Starting this week we will be choosing a student of the week from each third grade class. We hope that this will promote positive and respectful behavior towards peers and teachers. Some behaviors that we will be looking for include:

• Following directions the 1st time

• Showing kindness 

• Showing respect

• Respecting the "no"

We are hoping to highlight the students who are showing these behaviors all the time and encourage those who might need more of an incentive. We are not making it a priority that "everyone will get a turn"; instead, only those who are consistently showing the behaviors will get rewarded. Additionally, it might be that the same student earns Student of the Week more than once. The Student of the Week will be nominated on Fridays by third grade teachers (one per class) and will be featured on our 3rd grade blog, on Twitter, will wear a name tag, and pick wherever they would like to sit at lunch on that day.

What are we learning?

Math

In math, we will press on with our multiplication and division unit. We will continue with our "fact fluency" timed practice. Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday will be retake days for past quizzes. New quizzes will be taken on Wednesdays and Fridays. This will not be a grade of any sort, just a way to practice and reinforce memorizing multiplication facts. We have pushed back our introduction of 2 digit by 1 digit multiplication to ensure everyone has a solid understanding of multiplication concepts. To practice this, we will be reinforcing our multiplication representations including equal groups, arrays, number lines, and repeated addition. There are strategy videos to explain these representations on Miss Heath and Mrs. Naughton's websites. Additionally, we will get some more practice with multi-step multiplication word problems. 

Language Arts

In Reading we will finish up our unit on poetry. Learners will create a poetry journal, reflect on the different types of poems, and how they use their senses to analyze poems. We will finish up our book clubs on Biographies and use the app "Clips" to make trailers about the books.  

In writing we will begin our gratitude journals for the month of November. 

Science

In science, we will conclude our unit on Force, Motion, and Energy by completing our career connection trade card. 

Social Studies

In Social Studies, Learners will be being to research different historical and contemporary figures and the positive impact they had on communities.
